Having lived in California for 14 years, I have never seen a storm like this during June. It is unheard of. Typically the rainy season has ended long ago, by this time of year. The size of this monster storm is nearly 1,000 miles in diameter and is nearly perfectly symmetrical! California is currently getting pummeled with record breaking rainfall, while the storm is forecast to continue spinning its way east towards the coast. Thunderstorms are forecast for Saturday night and Sunday, which again is highly unusual in California this time of year. The weather events lately around the country, and the world, have been extraordinary and exciting to observe, except for the tragedies that have resulted from some of the severe weather. This particular storm looks to be so wrapped up, it appears similar to a hurricane in the visible satellite imagery from today. It is not a hurricane though. It is a very well defined low-pressure system. Picture Perfect. Bug-Out with Tent? Trailer? Other?
Guest Post: by Hal Modern motor homes can cost several thousand dollars. Travel trailers, especially some of the fifth wheelers can go for the price of an inexpensive home. With the slide-outs and other amenities they will provide a high level of luxury to the owner. But, they are not realistic answers to a survival shelter if a person must bug out when TSHTF. Let’s consider some options available to the average guy under such circumstances. Tenting Tents, say a six person pop-up for example will provide a compact, inexpensive degree of privacy and shelter from the weather under normal circumstances. It won’t take up a lot of valuable space in the SUV and can be set up virtually anywhere there is a campground (especially the so-called primitive ones). They’re used by camping families around the country all the time. They can be set up in a town park if a person found himself stuck in the suburbs somewhere and there were no motel rooms available. There are numerous problems with considering using a tent under social breakdown conditions however. A tent will provide no security. They make poor living quarters for long term use. They’re hot in warm weather and hard to keep warm for long periods of time when the weather gets cold. And they’re not overly durable. Travel trailers Travel trailers can offer the conveniences of a small efficiency apartment. They make a good choice during breakdown conditions but they require a potential owner to be willing to lay out the money for a medium-size pick-up or Chevy Suburban type vehicle to pull it. These cost big bucks if you don’t already have one; are expensive to drive and will demand having that much more extra fuel to get to your ultimate destination. The travel trailer will be difficult, if not impossible to negotiate through panicky traffic in those immediate, post SHTF highway conditions and on those back woods and mountainous roads you my want to travel on. They will also be a target for others who might want to appropriate the travel trailer for their own purposes. Cargo and Bug-Out trailers rigs This type of trailer may be the best option for the person wanting to get out of Dodge. For one, they can be pulled by the average car or small pick-up with a basic hitch. They are smaller, and subsequently more maneuverable. They can be pre-packed with much of your emergency/camping supplies thereby saving critical time when the decision is made to “book out.” They are used regularly by landscapers and carpenter-types and won’t attract the attention of the motorhome/travel trailers. They’re easier to park in your driveway or side yard without attracting the unnecessary attention of the neighbors or town codes enforcement officer (no small thing). Once at your destination – maybe a distant, small campground, friend’s back field or a lot you may own out in the hinderland you can set up the tent you also carried to handle chairs and folding table for meals and relaxation. You can set up an awning from the back of it for more useable space. You can set up sleeping quarters inside for the privacy and security hard walls can provide. The cargo trailer option would not be the Waldorf Astoria but with a little creativity, could be a viable choice for the person who doesn’t have a retreat somewhere and can’t afford a big travel trailer. Ken adds: Also, an interesting bug-out mechanism is a product that is available from Safecaste (prepared.pro), one of our sponsors. They have several custom designed bug-out trailer rigs for this specific purpose. One of the ‘tricks’ of a successful bug-out is to recognize a disaster situation before it happens, so that if you have to leave the area – you will be ahead of the crowd. This won’t always work because some disasters occur with little or no warning. Powerful Eruption at Iceland’s Grimsvotn
Ash could begin to reach parts of Scotland as early as Tuesday followed by Britain, France, and Spain while a powerful Icelandic volcano named Grimsfjall (also known as Grimsvotn) continues to erupt there at the Vatnajökull ice cap (Europe’s largest glacier). One insider said, “There was no warning at all…approximately 20 minutes from first quake to eruption,” “First estimations show this is 10x larger than the 2004 eruption.” There were some expectations that the next eruption at Grimsfjall/Grimsvotn would be stronger, due to increased bulging inflation in the area, but the powerful explosion and ash plume reaching as high as 25 km, caught many out. A curious observation followed the initial quake swarm and eruption – Once the magma reaches the surface, the quakes typically stop. With Grimsfjall/Grimsvotn, another earthquake swarm persisted to the east. There is also renewed earthquake activity to the south, at the Katla volcano region, which itself is a time-bomb waiting to unleash its fury. Locally, the immediate threat is ash-fall, which this time is of a heavy consistency. Threats of glacial water flooding persist due to the intense volcanic heat melting the ice. Further away, European air traffic control are working with Meteorology Offices to determine the path of the ash cloud and the impact it may have on European air traffic this week. One year ago, much of European air traffic was shut down for 6 days from another Icelandic volcano that blew its top (Eyjafjallajokull), leaving countless stranded travelers and a dent in the economy. Magnus Tumi Gudmundsson, Professor of Geophysics at the University of Iceland, said “We see some signs that the power is declining a bit, but it is still quite powerful,” and also said that the eruption was the most violent at the volcano since 1873. The potential disruption during the upcoming week will depend on the atmospheric wind patterns, and the ongoing strength of the eruption itself. Spectacular Image of Grimsfjall – Grimsvotn Eruption, Ash Plume Update: 23-May-2011 Icelandic Meteorological Office and Institute of Earth Sciences, University of Iceland Eruption Plume Height (a.s.l.): The ash plume reached heights of 8 to 10 km last night and this morning. In the last hours, the plume has reached heights of 5 to 9 km, but northerly winds have been very strong which can effect the height. Eruption Plume Heading: Most of the ash cloud heads to the south. At altitudes of 8 km and higher, part of the plume heads to the west. Eruption Plume Colour: Brown- or grayish and sometimes black close to the eruption site. Tephra fallout: The amount of fallout is great from Vík in the west to the east of Öræfajökull. The amount of ash fall is the greatest close to the village Kirkjubæjarklaustur. Ash has been detected in several areas throughout the country, except in the northwest. A sample from Kirkjubæjarklaustur has been analyzed, which was taken around 1h on 22 May. The grains are glassy with micro crystals of plagioclase. Samples well sorted. Whole rock analysis: Basalt, with 50-51 Wt% SiO2 Leachate results: 5-10 mg/kg of waterdissolvable flour Grain size distribution: about 10% of the volume of the analyzed samples is finer than 10 micrometers Lightning: From 17-18h yesterday, about 300 lightning strikes were detected but much less thereafter. The strikes were most frequent south of Grímsvötn. Noise: No noise from the volcano has been reported. Meltwater: No changes in water level have been recorded in the rivers Gígja and Núpsvötn. Since the eruption is practically at the same site inside the Grímsvötn caldera as the last eruption, ice-melt is not expected to be great and therefore swelling of rivers in the next few days is not expected. Conditions at eruption site: The eruption site is in the southwest corner of the Grímsvötn caldera, in the same site as the 2004 eruption. The basaltic magma is fragmented into tephra in violent magma-water interaction. Very powerful explosions occur at the eruption site. Seismic tremor: Seismic tremor at the Grímsfjall station was fairly stable last night. After midnight andtoday, the tremor levels have been fluctuating and decreasing slightly. Earthquakes: No earthquakes have been recorded in the volcano since yesterday afternoon. GPS deformation: Rapid deformation was detected at the CGPS station Grimsvotn (GFUM) in the first hours of the eruption. GFUM is located 5 km east of the eruption site. In the first four hours the site moved ~ 20 cm in the north direction, 15 cm towards west and subsided 10 cm. The deformation rate has since slowed down, with the total displacement in the first two days of the eruption about 50 cm to the northwest, with 25 cm subsidence. These displacements are ~60% larger than comparable measurements made after the 1998 and 2004 eruptions of Grímsvötn. Overall assessment: The eruption has abated slightly since yesterday. No effusion of lava has been observed. When the Dollar is no longer a Reserve Currency
I believe the U.S. is in the midst of a major currency collapse, and a huge change in our normal way of life. The following is a list of notes that I wrote, as well as statements credited to Stansberry Research as I watched a promotional video that they recently made. Although they were trying to sell a newsletter, much of what was said ‘rang true’ with me, and I believe that something like this could indeed happen here. The government has been borrowing so much money, that soon, we will not be able to afford even the interest on the loans. Income tax receipts are roughly $900 billion a year. Corporate taxes are roughly $200 billion annually. Our current annual deficits are nearly $1.3 trillion, meaning we’re spending $900 billion + $200 billion + $1.3 trillion = $2.4 trillion. Even if you doubled tax revenue, we would still be running a deficit! Even if all U.S. citizens were taxed 100% of their income, it would still not be enough to balance the Federal budget! Tax increases will not even make the smallest dent on the true size of our debt. There is not a single credible plan, by any political party, to merely end our annual deficits, never mind actually paying back our debts. Here’s the kicker… the costs of maintaining our debts are about to skyrocket. For years, the Federal Reserve has been keeping interest rates very low, to almost zero, and as a result, the interest rate at which the U.S. government borrows money from the Federal Reserve is an incredibly low level. This won’t last forever. How much interest? Right now we’re paying about 15% of federal tax receipts (about $200 billion a year). If the government had to spend a ‘real’ market-based rate of interest, say 6%, it would cost $840 billion a year on interest (76% of tax receipts), just for what we owe right now, today. We are trapped. The main-stream-media does not want you to know how precarious our government’s finances really are. A debt default would be inevitable if not for one anomaly, the thing that has saved the U.S. so far, that is, the country’s ability to simply print more money. The U.S. is the only debtor in the world who can legally print U.S. dollars, and the dollar is the world’s reserve currency. So, that sounds pretty good, just print more money, what is there to worry about? The U.S. is the only country in the world that doesn’t have to pay for its imports or its debts in a foreign currency. Example: A German wants to buy oil from Saudi Arabia – the German cannot pay for the oil in German marks (or Euro’s) because the oil is priced in dollars. You have to buy dollars first, then buy your oil. The U.S. has been able to consume as much as we want without worrying about acquiring the money to pay for it, because U.S. dollars are accepted everywhere around the world. As our creditors continue to figure out what’s happening (printing more and more dollars), we’re going to have very BIG problems. The creditors will either begin to refuse payment in dollars, or they will greatly discount the value of these new dollars. It’s already happening. Most Americans have no clue what the repercussions are of losing the status of world currency. Yes it can happen here. In fact, the exchange value of the U.S. dollar has fallen about 13% since June 2010. Its rate of decline is accelerating. As the U.S. dollar continues to lose it’s position as the world’s currency, gas, oil, and other commodities will continue to skyrocket. Almost everything we consume will immediately get more expensive. It’s happening right now. Everything is getting more expensive. The government says that there is no inflation. How is that even possible? They actually believe that the American public is going to believe them? It’s only going to get worse, because we can NOT stop printing because we can’t actually afford our existing debts. No one wants you to know this. No one. That’s why, despite the obvious inflation going on all around the world, the Fed continues to say there’s no inflation at all. The government is radically devaluing the dollar and totally lying to everyone about what is really happening. The Chinese are getting out of the dollar as fast as they can via strategic commodities. With less demand for the dollar around the globe, interest rates will skyrocket. Instead of getting a mortgage at today’s low rates of 5%, it may soon cost you 8% or 10% or 15%. Stock prices will likely plummet by at least 40% in a matter of weeks as a result of this event in the currency markets. When the U.S. dollar loses its spot as the world’s reserve currency, the brutal downturn will be about 10-times worse than the mortgage crisis of 2008. When everyone is trying to get rid of their dollars, the government is printing more and more to pay debts, the crisis will reach epic proportions. In the past 100 years this type of debt crisis has reared its ugly head in Germany, Russia, Austria, Poland, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, the Ukraine, Japan, and China. Here’s the thing that most people don’t realize… The U.S. government can only continue printing dollars as long as the dollar remains the world’s reserve currency. Reported by Robert Fisk (veteran Middle East reporter), last fall, China, Japan, Russia, and France got together for a secret meeting… without the U.S. being present or even knowing about the meeting. It was reported that Gulf Arabs are plotting to end dollar dealings for oil, moving instead to a basket of currencies including the Japanese Yen, Chinese yuan, the euro, gold, and a new unified currency planned for nations in the Gulf including Saudi Arabia, Abu Dhabi, Kuwait, and Qatar. In February, the IMF has proposed replacing the U.S. dollar with something called ‘Special Drawing Rights’, or SDRs. SDRs will be able to be converted into any currency, based on a weighted basket of international currencies. The IMF also proposed creating SDR-denominated bonds, which could reduce central banks’ dependence on U.S. Treasuries. They also suggested that certain assets, such as oil and gold, which are traded in U.S. dollars, could be priced using SDRs. (This is a HUGE step to replace the U.S. dollar as the world’s reserve currency) Russian and China have made an agreement to settle all debts between them in each others currencies without first transferring to dollars. The U.S. dollar has remained the world’s reserve currency for more than 50 years. It seems as though its days are numbered. Don’t remain in denial. A few ideas: Start to consider what will happen around you when this currency crisis unfolds. Plan to have six months of food, medical supplies, and access to water. Have a place you can go to if you need to get out due to rioting or unrest. Do not count on the government to save you if all he$$ breaks loose. The government will be too concerned about saving itself. Examine where your current assets or investments are. Consider investing or purchasing hard assets, or food , private land. Learn how to garden some of your own food. Examine your security and add where it needs adding. The more self sufficient that you can become, the better you will get through the crisis. The Berkey Water Filters
We bought our ‘British Berkefeld’ Stainless Steel Gravity water filter about 8 years ago, for the purpose of providing safe drinking water during a 2-week vacation stay at a location in the Trinity Alp Wilderness area of northern California. It worked magnificently because none of us got sick from drinking the water. Even though water may appear pristine, and even though water may be coming from a source that is far from the hustle and bustle of civilization, there is still a high risk of invisible ‘nastiness’ being in the water – which could readily get you sick. Most ‘campers’, or even vacationers, have experienced this ill-fated condition after having drunk ‘bad’ water. It’s not fun. Ever since that first experience with that water filter, we’ve used it every time when we’ve vacationed in or at a similar location. There are several features that we like about it that stand out from other types of filter systems. It is a tabletop model, with a rubber ring around the bottom which holds it very secure without slipping on the table surface. We’ve even taken it with us on a rented motor-home road-trip while fully loaded with water on the edge of the counter and it never slipped. The fact that it is gravity fed means no pumping required. You just add water to the upper chamber by lifting the lid, and then the water slowly dribbles through the filter ‘candles’ into the bottom chamber. Another nice feature is the convenient spigot at the bottom for easy pouring. The filter elements, sometimes called ‘candles’ seemingly last forever. The specification on the element type that our filter uses is rated for 1,000 gallons per candle. So, that’s 2,000 gallons before we need to swap them out. That’s a lot of drinking water! The filter elements are impregnated with silver, so there is no issue regarding sterilization. I’m glad I bought my extra set of spare filters before the price of silver went through the roof Still worth it though… About a year ago we actually began using the filter full-time at the house. It has it’s own spot in the room next to the kitchen and we top it off once a day to have delicious water at the ready. Makes for a great tasting morning pot of coffee too! Our tap water here is actually quite good, in that it tastes much better than other waters that I’ve tasted around the country. I’m sure we all get used to the taste of our own water supply after awhile, but I am happy to know that the filter system is screening out nearly every impurity, no matter what the municipality adds to the water source. Great peace of mind. For the prepper, I strongly urge you to invest in a GOOD water filter system, at least one. One similar to this which could provide a very large supply of drinking water over time, and one that is built to last a lifetime. You should also have at least one GOOD portable water filter too. We have a portable unit for each of our two car kits, which could also be used on a hike, or wherever. One great sponsor of our site is ‘Jeff’, ‘The Berkey Guy’. He has been distributing Berkey water filters for many years and is well known in the industry. I know for certain that his products are the best there are when it comes to water filters, and I strongly urge you to visit his site and consider purchasing a potential life-saving piece of gear. If the $hite ever hits the fan for real, the municipal water supplies could go down or become contaminated. You won’t regret having a high quality water filter. Visit the Berkey Guy’s products here at http://directive21.com Even if they were not a sponsor, I would still recommend them! Radon Gas Radiation in America
While so many are worried about radiation levels in the U.S. lately, as a result from the Fukushima nuclear power plant meltdown disaster, the U.S. EPA says exposure to Radon in the home is responsible for an estimated 21,000 lung cancer deaths each year, and radon is the number one cause of lung cancer among non-smokers . Radon, simply put, is a health hazard. Radon is a natural radioactive gas that emanates from the ground into the air as a result of Uranium breaking down in the soil. Radon gas in the air is present worldwide, its concentration depending on the uranium content of the soil. Radon in our homes is the main source of exposure to ionizing radiation, and accounts for 50% of the public’s exposure to naturally-occurring sources of radiation in many countries, according to the WHO. Radon gas escapes easily from the ground into the air and emits heavily ionizing radiation called alpha particles . These particles are electrically charged and attach to dust and other particles in the air we breathe. As a result, the alpha particles can damage our DNA and potentially cause lung cancer. Radon gas gets into your house through cracks at concrete floor-wall junctions, gaps in the floor, pores in hollow-block walls, and also sumps and drains. Because of this, radon levels are usually higher in basements, cellars or other areas in contact with soil. The U.S. EPA recommends homes be fixed if the radon level is 4 pCi/L (pico Curies per Liter), although they do recommend considering action above 2 pico Curies. Radon level chart for a ‘never-smoker’ (number of people who may get lung cancer in their lifetime) 1.3 pCi/L: 2 out of 1,000 2 pCi/L: 4 out of 1,000 4 pCi/L: 7 out of 1,000 8 pCi/L: 15 out of 1,000 10 pCi/L: 18 out of 1,000 20 pCi/L: 36 out of 1,000 Radon level chart for a ‘smoker’ (number of people who may get lung cancer in their lifetime) Note: If you are a former smoker, your risk may be lower. 1.3 pCi/L: 20 out of 1,000 2 pCi/L: 32 out of 1,000 4 pCi/L: 62out of 1,000 8 pCi/L: 120 out of 1,000 10 pCi/L: 150 out of 1,000 20 pCi/L: 260 out of 1,000 After looking at this Radon pico curie level chart, you might consider getting a Radon detector for your home. It could save you and your family from developing lung cancer from long-term radon exposure. There are basically two types of radon gas detectors. One type is a one-time use where you let it sit in your home for 4 days and then send it to a lab for results. A second type, and better, is one that measures the radon gas level constantly, and gives real-time results. An advantage to having a constantly-measuring type radon detector, is that 4-day tests can be very misleading because they can spike for a variety of reasons like if the ground is frozen, or it rains, for example. It costs less than a professional radon test, does more (continually measures the levels) AND you can let family and friends borrow it. The following radon gas detector appears to be the one of the best-priced, highly reviewed, constant measuring type. Safety Siren Pro Series HS71512 3 Radon Gas Detector With so much focus today from some of the U.S. public on radiation levels and radioactive particles drifting over from Japan, this particular other radiation threat – radon – could be in your home right now, and in vastly higher quantities. Some people already know about radon (tests are often required before purchasing a home in certain parts of the country), but in keeping with the theme of Modern Survival, I’ll bet that lots don’t know about this risk. Fortunately though, this risk can be readily detected, and actions taken to greatly reduce or eliminate it. U.S. to invade Libya?
Libya has the largest oil reserves in Africa, and 3 percent of the total global oil. The US Sixth Fleet has positioned its ships in such a manner which is bringing speculation of an invasion of Libya. It has been widely reported on Wednesday that two US military ships entered the Suez Canal while heading towards the Libyan coast. Ships have also reportedly taken tactical positions off the North African coast of Libya in the Mediterranean. Remember this, The standard currency of the world is oil. According to a report from rt.com , British Labor MP Jeremy Corbyn said that the scenario that unfolded in Iraq is now very likely to repeat itself in Libya. “It is looking quite possible that key NATO members will launch an attack, with or without UN approval, so we are looking almost at a repeat of what happened in Iraq and indeed the results, I suspect, will be largely the same,” he said. He added that the reason why the West has suddenly become deeply concerned about human rights in Libya is solely the country’s oil. He also pointed out that there is no such thing as a quick military intervention. “The lessons have not been learned when it comes to Iraq, which remains unstable even now, with only feeble growth of the much-vaunted democracy that the US tried to plant there. Allied troops are equally bogged down in Afghanistan, with no convincing timeline for withdrawal, and an ever-rising death toll.” We are living in uncertain times. In a world that depends on ‘cheap’ oil for any sort of economic stability, we should all be prepared for turmoil, disruption, and high oil prices – which would ripple through all of the economy and hike the prices of nearly everything that we purchase and consume. How can we be prepared? A good preparation is to leave yourself enough margin in your budget to absorb these things. Reduce your debt. Do not add new debt. Be nimble, adaptive, and resilient. Be frugal. Prepare for the worst, and you will benefit peace of mind. Major Cold, Snow to Strike USA
Permalink Forecasters are lining up in agreement that although it is Winter time, an exceptionally major and widespread disruptive period of cold and snow is about to descend upon nearly all of the U.S. beginning this weekend and extending into the foreseeable future. The early part of the 2010-2011 winter in the U.S., until recently has had somewhat typical fluctuations of cold versus mild conditions varying from the East to the West while December has brought an increase in record cold in some regions. The arctic blast due to descend from the North will capture the entire U.S. and may bring extraordinary cold and snow as far south as Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Georgia, and South Carolina. Current snow cover across the U.S. blankets approximately half the country. During the upcoming few weeks, the snow cover could potentially extend to most of the country. Global temperatures tend to respond to the ocean temperatures. Six months after an El Nino (Pacific equatorial ocean temperatures above normal), temperatures elsewhere are warmer. Six months after a La Nina (Pacific equatorial ocean temperatures below normal), things start turning colder. The present temperature of the Pacific ocean waters is in progress of a La Nina (a number of months in), and things are getting colder. There is a lag effect, and we are now evidently beginning to experience it. NOAA data currently predicts La Nina conditions through the summer of 2011. Young children who have yet to experience a “snow day” off from school, may get their first chance in the coming week or two. Time to fill the furnace oil tank, get another cord of wood ready, dig out the extra blankets, find the ice scraper, store a shovel in the trunk, ready the sand – salt – grit, and brace yourself… it’s going to get cccold. Shoppers Panic!
Permalink Having just returned from running a few errands during New Years Eve Day, I felt it would be informative to post an observation that I believe to be telling about what could happen during a real crisis situation. We ran out to the grocery store to pick up a few things (in retrospect, it would’ve been better to wait until after the Holiday), things we didn’t really need to get today – but we did anyway. Let me tell you, I was astounded by the “bad” behavior of most drivers on the road and shoppers inside the stores, most of them with a genuine look of of panic about their face. This was the same “look” and behavior that I grew up accustomed to while living in New England years ago, seeing it the day before – or the day of a snowstorm. People would flock to the grocery stores in sheer panic, and clean out the bread and milk shelves first, and then move on to anything else they could get their hands on. All the while practically pushing and shoving, rushing to get to the shelves first, and with complete disregard for others around them. Desperation. What surprised me today was the fact that we are not in New England, there is no snowstorm tomorrow, Okay there’s a rainstorm brewing in the Pacific – big deal. It’s simply the day of New Years Eve. People were desperately grabbing supplies for their parties tonight, or Holiday dinner tomorrow. It was as if they didn’t have anything in their cupboards at home at all, or cannot deal with the store being closed for just one day. I don’t know how many people dashed their shopping carriage into mine, and how many of them would dart in front of us – cutting us off in order to grab that tub of butter first, after all, their were only about 100 of them left… “Unbelievable”, I said to Lauren. Imagine these people in a “real” crisis? It would be like a disaster movie where people are slugging it out to get the last case of toilet paper and people stealing the carriages of others madly running out of the grocery store filled with the last bits of product left inside the place… Truly, many of these people had “the look” in their eyes on the edge of panic. We really are just 9 meals away from chaos in this country! I’ll bet that many of you that read this will know exactly what I’m talking about. Amazing, isn’t it?! Happy New Year! My First Thrift Town Experience
Permalink My following experience is a perfect fit for the recession-proof-household category, and anyone looking for bargains. I have been living in the same area for a little more than a decade and have probably driven past a particular medium size building storefront on the main drag about 5,000 times, and had never stopped in to check it out. Until the other day. This store is called “ Thrift Town “. My wife had stopped by there many times and had been trying to get me to check it out, while my neighbor visits the store regularly and is always returning home with amazing bargains. The store itself is mostly filled with racks and racks of clothing, men – women – kids – all sizes – all types. There are also a fair number of miscellaneous items that are not clothes. I finally gave in the other day, and checked it out. You see, all along I had this idea in my head that the clothes at these type of bargain stores, being “used”, were for other people, not me. I’m not sure why I had this mental block, especially being one myself to look for bargains. For some reason, the thought of wearing another persons clothes, didn’t sit right with me – as if the clothes would be dirty or have “germs” on it or something. I was wrong. When I started browsing through the mens racks, I couldn’t believe my eyes. Most of the clothes were in excellent condition, many of them hardly showing any signs of wear, while a surprising number of them were brand name labels. They were perfectly clean, and if I didn’t know any better, many of them could have been on racks in “real” clothing stores. Now here is the best part. Talk about a bargain… every single mens shirt in the place had a price tag of either $1.99 or $2.99! What? Really? The pants, the shorts, the sweaters, almost everything was priced the same, pretty much the most you would pay is $2.99! After sifting through the enormous quantities of clothes, all very well organized by sizes, I walked out with a handful of shirts and shorts that cost me about $25. One of the shirts was even a Nordstrom polo shirt, in near perfect condition. These same clothes were probably worth at one time (not too long ago), about $150 or more. The store appears to have a great business model, was very busy, and they appear to have about 15 locations in 4 western states. I have no idea if the other stores operate similarly (I assume that they do), and this isn’t an endorsement of the company itself. However, it made me think about how there are probably other similar stores in the country, just waiting for you to stop by and pick up some deep bargains. Even though most of us can afford to buy new clothes at the big name stores, you might be surprised at what you might find at a bargain outlet like this one, especially when looking for casual wear. Why not look for a store like this in your area, and Save Some Cash by buying “almost new”? I love my Dorcy Cyberlight Flashlight
Permalink I just picked up the Dorcy CyberLight flashlight, and was so impressed with it that I had to post a short accolade about the product. In its price range, which is very affordable and not expensive, dare I say “cheap” price range, this flashlight performs, and would be perfect for many types of survival kits and general purpose uses. Dorcy CyberLight Features The very first impression after removing the packaging was its handy shape, color, and size. Then, my second impression after turning it on was, “Wow”! The shape has squared off corners that are rubberized. This will keep it from rolling when you set it down while the rubber edges provide some protection against shock. There are hand grips underneath that form perfectly to a natural hold while your thumb naturally rests on the light switch. The color is mostly yellow. How genius is that. During the times when you need a flashlight and are looking for it, the environment is dark, and most flashlights today are painted black! The size seems perfect for normal general use. It is not big and it is not small either. I would say that it is definitely smaller than a typical general purpose household flashlight that would hold a handful of C or D size batteries (this one holds 4 AA batteries). Now lets talk about the light . When I first turned it on, my first word was “Wow”. It was a lot brighter than I had expected. It is an LED flashlight, one LED (lifetime), and boy is it bright (180 Lumens). Not only that but the spot beam is very tight and projects a very long distance, indicating a very unique designed reflector. One warning, don’t look directly into the light source. It is that bright… and it may cause damage. The product is made by a well respected flashlight company, Dorcy International, while the product is made in the country where most all of our products are made today. It’s all about the specs and the design. Don’t get me wrong, there are many very high quality flashlights out there (you pay a lot for them), but for the price, this one is a keeper. I’m definitely ordering more, one for each car and probably a bedside replacement for my heavy old maglite (which is black and hard to find in the dark, and has probably rolled away when I set it down last because it is round). Have a look at the Dorcy Cyber Light Flashlight and consider picking one or two up to add to your survival preparedness kits.
