Still Think the Dollar is Safe?

Even the president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, Richard Fisher, said today that the U.S. is on a path towards insolvency. “I look at this as a tipping point”, “…its’ going to be very painful”, he said after a speech at the University of Frankfurt. ZeroHedge.com reports that Bank of America’s chief chartist Mary Ann Bartels, said there is a possibility for another 10% drop in the broader market index, while also reporting that incredibly, the dollar has lost 7.5% of its value in less than 3 months (since January 7th 2011) and more than 17% in just 8 months since August 2010. Oil is spiking with all of the Middle East conflict, while OPEC expects $120 oil soon. Gold and Silver are setting new highs once again. The world continues to lose the credibility of the dollar The U.S. government continues to overspend (more than it takes in revenue) by nearly $80,000.00 per second of each day. The monthly deficit is equivalent to giving every single person in Shreveport Louisiana a Million Dollars, or lets say Fayetteville North Carolina, or how about Yonkers New York or Spokane Washington. Gee I bet it wouldn’t take long to just simply give every working person in the U.S. a million dollars at this rate… I wonder who’s getting all this money… While the political machine begins to ramp up for the 2012 elections, chances are that the politicians will not have the will power to do anything significant about the current federal spending, or state spending for that matter. The point is, the dollar is in increasing danger of a potential severe drop in value, a situation that could come on very quickly and avalanche. Some say that this will very likely occur especially if the dollar index drops below 75 – or worse yet, 71. What can the regular person do about any of this? The best thing is to simply be aware of the possibility and prepare or ‘hedge your bets’ accordingly. Now, more than ever, is probably a good time to be sure that your ‘ducks are in a row’, and your preparedness plans are nearly complete. The world is in uncharted territory and we should not assume that the world’s economic systems will somehow remain solvent and credible. Things do change, and not always for the better. Look at the bright side, if you believe that there is real risk, then you will likely take action, whatever that may be. That is a good thing. Lieberman Crafts Internet Kill-Switch Legislation

In case you haven’t read about this already, those of you in the U.S. may be interested to know that a new congressional bill to enable an Internet Kill Switch for the U.S. has been crafted by Senator Joseph Lieberman (I-Connecticut), Susan Collins (R-Maine), and Tom Carper (D-Delaware). Yes, the bill is actually nicknamed, ‘Kill Switch’. Apparently, rather than trusting businesses to continue and maintain their own cyber-security (which of course they already do today), evidently there are those in U.S. government who would rather maintain an internet shut-off switch which they say is needed to defend the economic infrastructure from a cyberterrorist attack. Quoted in USA Today, “This is all about control, an attempt to control every aspect of our existence,” says Christopher Feudo, a cybersecurity expert who is chairman of SecurityFusion Solutions. “I consider it an attack on our personal right of free speech. Look what recently occurred in Egypt.” The bill has free-speech advocates and privacy experts howling over the prospect of a government agency quelling the communication of hundreds of millions of people. From usatoday.com, computer-security expert Ira Winkler, a staunch advocate of the legislation, counters, “The fact that people are complaining about this fact is grossly ignorant of the real world. The fact that critical infrastructure elements are even accessible to the Internet is the worst part to begin with.” A 1934 federal law that created the Federal Communications Commission allows the president to “authorize the use or control” of communications outlets during moments of emergency of “public peril or disaster.” The Lieberman-led bill would be considered a specific extension of that and let the nation’s chief executive prioritize communications on the Internet. A provision in the bill lets the president take limited control during an emergency and decide restrictions. “ It, essentially, gives the president a loaded gun ,” says CEO Michael Fertik, a lawyer with expertise in constitutional law and Internet privacy law. Questions Is this more ‘big brother’, or ‘big sis’ at work to control more U.S. liberties? Is this more about information control and establishing hard interception points to filter-gather data as it flows among U.S. individuals and business? Is the Internet a ‘national asset’ to be ‘nationalized’? How would they determine who-what-where of the specific internet-provider connections where the Internet connects to infrastructure? Do the U.S. legislatures and politicians have the technical savvy to employ such a technical bill? Who defines, and what will be the definition of an ‘emergency’, at which time the president can throw the switch? full story at usatody.com Modern Survival Blog related posts Debt, Government, and Change, is it Too Late? Debt, Government, and Change, is it Too Late?

Permalink During situations that are doomed to failure, when does “real” change finally come? Answer 1: When the absolute end of the road is reached, standing at the edge of the cliff with no choice but to “change”, or fall into the abyss. Answer 2: When external forces are applied to change the outcome prior to reaching the end, or a would-be conclusion. Newton’s first law of motion pretty much sums it up, “An object at rest will remain at rest unless acted on by an unbalanced force. An object in motion continues in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force”. Change is not the easy way, the easy way is to keep on going in the same direction. Makes sense, yes? This notion can be applied across the board, to the physical, to the philosophical, to the direction of our personal finances, our goals, our economy, our government, on and on… During 2010 there seems to have been an increasing “sense” among many, that things aren’t quite right out there. That is, out there in the world – the economy, employment, governments. There seems to be more and more vocalization about what has been happening around us, more vocalization than in the past. Many can’t seem to quite put their finger on it, and they are unable to quickly say, “The problem here is this “. That is because there is much more than “this” , more than one problem, there are many – many problems, many of which are intertwined, related, and affecting the overall feeling of uneasiness about the current direction we are heading. Many are maxed out, stressed out, and are beginning to speak out. Unemployment How did we get here where the “SGS” unemployment rate is running nearly 23 percent in the U.S.  (the measurement method used prior to 1994)? Why does the government today use a method called “U.3″ to measure unemployment (currently 10%)? Why is it that the personal experiences of most folks interacting with other folks leads one to believe the SGS numbers more-so than the U.3 numbers? Inflation Why is it that the U.S. government numbers for inflation, today reflect a number less than 2 percent, while the method used to calculate inflation in 1990 would be more than 4 percent, and the method used to calculate inflation during 1980 would be more than 8 percent? Why is it that most Americans have a “sense” that their cost of living has been increasing more than the claimed percentage quoted by the U.S. government? Spending Why is it that more and more U.S. states are on the verge of bankruptcy? Why have most States and local municipalities continued to spend more while taking in less? Why are big funds and other investors, seemingly purchasing less and less bonds from these entities, which keep them afloat? How is it that the U.S. government annual deficit is now 1.3 Trillion (and rapidly going higher) while the national debt is nearly 14 Trillion? How did we get to where every working American (using the governments own misleading numbers) owes 100 Thousand to the debt, not including any of the unfunded liability programs or other state and local debt obligations? How is it even possible that when adding the current debt of federal government, state government, local government, business, household, and U.S. unfunded liabilities (social security, medicare, and medicare prescription drugs), that the total liability per U.S. taxpayer at this moment is a nauseating 1 Million each?! How many people know this? Printing Press Why is today’s 2010 dollar worth only 4 percent of the value it had during 1913 (the start of the Federal Reserve)? Why is it that every single brand new dollar that is printed by the Federal Reserve (a private bank), is then “loaned” to the U.S. federal government with a debt attached to it (interest)? Why does every new dollar put the U.S. further in debt? Why is it that we need a federal reserve system? Why can’t the U.S. federal government print its own money, without having to pay interest to a private bank and private organization of banksters? Everyone must Work Why is it required that both spouses have to “work” in the system to make ends meet? Why just a few decades ago would only one spouse need to work to provide a comfortable life for the family? Why have the corporations and businesses (after having cut back so drastically on employment while loading on work stress to those that are left) not hiring any workers back while their corporate profits and executive incomes are at record high levels? Gold and Silver Why has the price of gold and silver soared to such highs? Why are gold vending machines popping up in locations around the world, and why do we see so many ads from businesses buying gold and gold jewelery? Why is something like gold and silver being valued as real money by more and more people, and perceived to be worth what it is, in relative terms to a piece of Fiat paper printed with special ink? Why is gold worth more than paper? Derivatives Time Bomb What is this thing called “derivatives” which apparently has something to do with hundreds of Trillions of dollars of unregulated “bets” made on untold numbers of pre-packaged assets carrying various risks – something which if called due, would collapse the entire global economic system as we know it? World Government Debt Why is it that so many countries of the world are in nearly the same “boat”, the same situation, owing so much money and being so deep in debt, while the same game continues to play as though nothing is wrong? Bailouts Why have we been hearing about so many “bailouts”, ranging from privately held businesses, foreign banks, to entire country governments? When a company or entire government is bailed out, what does that really mean? Since it makes sense that their debts would not be wiped clean (that wouldn’t be fair, would it?), but refinanced instead – with more cost in the end, doesn’t this just delay the inevitable? And more important, who ends up paying for the bailouts? Are you and I, the taxpayers, the ones who have to pay? Is that why it has been so easy for government bodies to be willing to bailout seemingly every big company, bank, bankster, or country that gets in too deep over their heads, because “they” don’t really have to pay for it – you and I do? Is that why? These are just some of the questions that “thinking” people are beginning to ask and vocalize among themselves. Something is not quite right. That is for sure. The real question is, is it already too late to change and prevent a disaster, given the current dire facts? Can there be real change in time to prevent a collapse? Some think not and are preparing for the worst. Others think it can be done, but only through great pain. Still others do not even realize what is happening around them – and assume that everything will be alright – because everything has always been alright. What is your position? What are you doing to protect and prepare for the eventualities? You Are Being Tracked – Real Time

Permalink When a government is so entirely adamant on surveillance and tracking of its own citizens, what does that mean? There is something very disturbing about the notion of technological advancements that now easily enable people-tracking to an extraordinary degree. While one may ask, “What do you have to worry about – so long as you’re doing nothing wrong”, the fact remains that most of us are being watched and tracked throughout our day-to-day lives, while the vast majority of us are doing nothing wrong. We have become numbers within complicated computer algorithms that are in real-time scanning for triggers and thresholds which could suddenly pop your ID into a category that you may not expect. Here are just a few of the ways that you are likely being tracked. Credit cards, ATM cards, grocery store discount and loyalty programs, department store cards, bank transactions, cell phone tracking, RFID chips, GPS enabled vehicle tracking, E-mail, your current ISP location, travel – tickets, rental car, surveillance cameras, magazine subscriptions, memberships, affiliations, online habits, products you purchase, who you communicate with, on and on the list goes. No doubt there is a government network operations center, maybe named the CWC (Citizen Watch Center), with a cavernous room whose walls and rows of computer monitors are filled with agents watching projected maps, dots, and lines of various colors and intensities, any of which can be zoomed in for a closer personal look and last known activity, location, and history. This type of thing used to be fiction, only to be read in a novel or watched in a Hollywood movie. I’ll betcha that it exists today, somewhere. The point being, as our liberties continue to rapidly erode around us in our former democracy, we should be very conscious about the fact that nearly everything we do and everywhere we go is being recorded in a digital database somewhere, and is being analyzed by our own governments computer systems based on their own definitions of good and bad and in-between, not your definition . Surely this is not going on everywhere, yet, but here in the US, no doubt that it is. A recent story on wired.com sheds some light on the subject of Americans being tracked. S.510 Government Grab, What’s Next?

Permalink There is more reason, now more than ever, to plant your own little patch of survival garden come next Spring. Food prices are going up and are predicted to go up rapidly during 2011 as probable inflation sets in with the further devaluing of the dollar (and most all other currencies). In the US, the Senate is currently ready to pass legislation which will definitely attribute to higher food costs, and may harm small farmers who sell locally (although there is an amendment being considered to exempt “small” farmers who sell locally). Senate Bill S.510 , the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act , if passed in the Senate, will move on to the House of Representatives for the next approval. The bill will layer a new set of government bureaucracy on the food industry with a purpose of further prevention of food-borne illness which kill up to 5,000 people each year. Although preventing deaths is a wonderful thing, and being assured that the foods we purchase at grocery stores are “OK”, to what end will government go to “protect” us from ourselves? I wonder if existing FDA (Food and Drug Administration) regulations and inspections could be improved instead of building a entire new layer of regulations, requirements, and personnel, all of which apparently will fall under the Department of Homeland Security. Apart from the government continuing to grow and billow out of control while unworldly deficits mount, the buzz on the Internet about this bill has been the possible regulation of food from ALL sources including the small farmer and backyard gardeners. I did some due-diligence and browsed through some of the paperwork of this bill (as much as I could tolerate before reaching for a bottle of Aspirin) on the Library of Congress website, and fortunately did not find reference to regulations on my patch of tomato plants in the backyard. Until I see helicopters overhead with Infrared or night vision FLIR systems looking for beans, lettuce, or tomato plants in backyards, I will hold off on ordering that giant sun mesh net to hide my backyard from the helicopters and spy satellites However, the Sen. John Tester amendment seemingly aims to exempt farms who sell within a 400 mile radius and have revenues under $500K, while they would still be required to comply with existing regulations. Without this amendment, it does seem as though the bill would be all reaching. As far as I know, the amendment is not approved yet. If anyone knows differently, or has more insight to this bill, please comment, and let us all know. Given that the government’s excuse for the bureaucratic layer and regulations is to save some of the 5,000 lives lost due to food-borne illness, then who’s to say what they will implement next? For example, in the US there are more than 40,000 deaths each year resulting from car accidents. That is 8 times as many deaths from food-borne illness. Perhaps a government designed or properly approved and regulated automobile is in order, to save us. Wait a minute… I believe the government owns a majority interest of General Motors… Uh-Oh. Rather than boring you with more similar examples, suffice it to say that the government cannot save us from ourselves. The USA has become a Nanny State – Police State. The pressure of the noose around the necks of the American public continue to tighten while they are reaching deeper into our pockets for every last penny that they can find. …just my opinion. North Carolina Gun Ban During Hurricane Earl

Permalink Hurricane Earl exposed a potentially dangerous law in North Carolina, and may be lurking in your state as well. When North Carolina governor Beverly Perdue declared a state of emergency prior to the onset of Hurricane Earl, among other things it triggered general statute 14-288.7 which suspended the rights of lawful citizens to carry firearms outside their premises for protection of their life or property. § 14 288.7. Transporting dangerous weapon or substance during emergency; possessing off premises; exceptions. (a) Except as otherwise provided in this section, it is unlawful for any person to transport or possess off his own premises any dangerous weapon or substance in any area: (1) In which a declared state of emergency exists; or (2) Within the immediate vicinity of which a riot is occurring. (b) This section does not apply to persons exempted from the provisions of G.S. 14 269 with respect to any activities lawfully engaged in while carrying out their duties. (c) Any person who violates any provision of this section is guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor. (1969, c. 869, s. 1; 1993, c. 539, s. 192; 1994, Ex. Sess., c. 24, s. 14(c).) Given the fact that during a disaster we nearly always witness looting and criminal activity from the bottom dwellers of society looking to take advantage of the situation, this is the precise time when lawful citizens need to be on their guard to protect themselves, family, and property. It is absolutely astounding to me how a government body would willfully and purposefully strip a citizenry from their lawful right to protect themselves in this manner. The criminal element of any society by very definition choose to not obey laws imposed upon them. Therefore, in this particular instance within North Carolina, the citizenry is placed under increased danger in an already dangerous situation when they need protection the most. I realize that not everyone believes in gun ownership and I know that there are those that are simply afraid of guns in general, no matter who has them (criminals or law abiding citizens). Some people are purely pacifists by nature and are willing to succumb to a violent situation if encountered. They rest their hope of rescue on the authorities of government. This is their choice, one which I do not argue because people are who they are, and I respect that fact. However, when analyzing the sanity of such a law as this North Carolina statute 14-288.7, the illogical nature of it is simply dumbfounding. A person who has legally obtained the permission to carry a firearm, suddenly cannot carry it, because there is a state-of-emergency? This is probably the precise time when it is extra important for that person to be carrying a firearm. Yes? For those opposed to firearms, just think about the logic for a moment. A citizen, trained and licensed to carry a firearm, who is considered safe to do so by the State, suddenly cannot do so… because something changes with that person during a state of emergency making it unsafe? Sorry but, I just don’t get it. In any event, it struck me as an important notation for the survival minded community. You might want to find out if your state has a similar law during a declared state of emergency, which will affect you (if you are a gun owner) in a time of disaster. Disasters bring out the best in people and also the worst. There will always be a bad element of society which will try and take advantage of those around them during opportunistic situations. It is your obligation as a human being to protect yourself and your life. What gives a government the right to strip you of your ability to protect yourself. Fortunately in the U.S. we have the 2nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, giving its citizens the right to keep and bear Arms. The current North Carolina law is being challenged in court. A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
