Given the very recent earthquake activity at Iceland’s Katla Volcano during June 17,2011, activity which looks like it has to do with magma movement, you may be interested in the following list of articles that I’ve written since April 2010 when it’s immediate neighbor, Eyjafjallajokull, erupted and interrupted European air traffic and commerce for a time. My interest in volcanoes (among many other things) led me to quickly discover that Katla has always historically erupted between 6 months and 1.5 years after Eyjafjallokull. The thing is, Katla has the potential to be 10 times as powerful as Eyja… and is now well within the historical window of eruption. A sudden onset of an earthquake swarm, as well as tremors with signatures of magma movement, has led many to suspect that Katla may now be at higher risk of an eruption soon. Sometimes these signals vanish as quickly as they come, and there is no way of knowing for certain what will happen next. Don’t be a Victim – Be Confident
Want to minimize the odds of becoming a victim of robbery or assault, while out in public? Just remember these two words, ‘be confident’ . A would-be attacker, robber, or assailant will most always look for easy prey. Just as the weakest of the herd in the animal kingdom typically fall first to a hungry predator, so too will a similarly apparent human become the likely victim of crime before that of a stronger opponent. Particularly true for women, who themselves are not usually as physically strong as most men, a few simple practiced traits could potentially discourage a lurking attacker. So, what is the secret? Appear, and be, confident while you are out in public. Walk with purpose, direction, and intent. Know where you are going, walk tall, shoulders back, confident strides, and use your eyes to look out straight and around, piercing, slightly suspicious – rather than looking down. This alone, will influence most potential attackers to take pause, allowing you to pass through their zone. You see, those that are looking for an easy robbery, or victim, will purposely choose someone whom they feel will offer the least resistance and the easiest means of escape after-the-fact. It’s common sense, really. Sure, there will be the exception to the rule, but to beat the odds, the appearance of confidence is the simplest and most effective means to stay safe. Here’s another clue… be observant and take appropriate action. Example… You are walking directly towards a destination down the street, say, 2 intersections away. While you are looking ahead, beyond what is directly in front of you, you notice a group of questionable characters hanging out near the sidewalk beyond the next street intersection. Even though your destination is on the same side of the street, you cross over to the other side of the street at the corner, and proceed in the same direction, and cross back over later – all the while looking perfectly purposed as though it was your intention all along. You avoid a potential confrontation, and you still make it to your destination. Example… You are walking to your vehicle which is parked in a mall parking lot or parking garage (any scenario is valid). Instead of fumbling for your keys after you’ve arrived at the vehicle, have your keys in hand while walking towards your vehicle – able to make a quick and efficient entry. Better yet, keep a small pepper-spray canister attached to your key chain and use it as the grasp in your hand – all the while at the ready. A whistle on the key-chain is a good deterrent too. Without getting into the scenarios of self-defense, the key is to avoid any confrontation in the first place. Appearing and being confident, and using your eyes and common sense, will often be all that you need to avoid becoming a victim. Practice it! Living in a Tiny Home – With No Mortgage
Here is an interesting video about a family that downsized in a major way. This is not from a “prep” perspective, but it could be. This idea could be used for a disaster retreat. It could also help people to get ready for the coming economic collapse. Two years ago, Debra and her family lived in a nearly 2000 square foot home on an acre and a half of land. Then her husband lost his job and they began to work 4 jobs between them to pay the mortgage, until one day they remembered they had a choice. Before having their son, Debra and her husband Gary had spent 9 years living in very tiny homes in South America. Living small hadn’t felt like a sacrifice, but a way to stay focused on what is important. They decided they wanted to get back to that. They stopped working so hard, sold or gave away all of their extra stuff and began looking for the perfect tiny home. Debra had always liked the Mississippi shotgun style homes, and one day, while browsing craigslist, they noticed an ad for a local Arkansas company custom building tiny homes for a price that could mean an end to house payments. Six weeks and $15,000 later they had their own fully paid-off dwelling. Today, Debra, her husband and 13-year-old son live in a 320-square foot home that is not a sacrifice, but exactly what they need. Thanks to Phil S. for forwarding this interesting video. Something Strange With Volcano Eruption in Chile
What appears to be an enormous ash cloud rising from the eruption of a long dormant volcano named Puyehue in southern Chile on June 4, 2011, isn’t quite matching up with the location of the recorded earthquakes today in the immediate area. “The Cordon Caulle (volcanic range) has entered an eruptive process, with an explosion resulting in a 10-kilometer-high gas column,” Chilean state emergency office said. The thing is, for some unknown reason, as of this writing, eight earthquakes near magnitude 5 have shook the earth near the Puyehue volcano. The problem is, the earthquakes are located 20 to 40 miles away from the eruption! Very Strange Indeed. ( Strange because one would think that the earthquakes associated with a given erupting volcano would be very close to the volcano itself. Instead, these strong quakes are apparently tectonic. ) There’s something brewing or interacting quite a distance from the eruption, but is quite obviously directly related. We’re talking about enormous energies here. In addition, apparently the volcano itself has not erupted from it’s old caldera. Instead, it has ripped a huge gash into the surface of the earth 6 miles long by 3 miles wide, 2.5 miles away! Amazing. Thousands of people are being evacuated from the area, which is located about 60 miles northwest of San Carlos. The region was deeply shaken by a pair of very strong earthquakes during 2010, a magnitude 7.1 and a very large magnitude 8.8 quake, all located along the Pacific Ring of Fire. Chile’s chain of about 2,000 volcanoes is the world’s second largest after Indonesia. Some 50 to 60 are on record as having erupted, and 500 are potentially active. Answer: To illustrate how we become complacent. This volcano has been inactive for decades, and then suddenly, ka-boom. We must realize that we are just tiny specs of life living on top of a thin crust of shifting solid earth, and at the mercy of mother nature. It’s always stunning to observe the power that lies beneath our feet. The ash plume has now reached Argentina. The eruption apparently extends to the Caulle Mountain Range, an adjacent volcanic fissure. credit: NASA’s Aqua Satellite If you enjoyed this, or topics of preparedness or current events risk awareness, consider our survival blog RSS feed, new posts by E-mail, or bookmark us at Modern Survival Blog Modern Survival Blog related posts Powerful Eruption at Iceland’s Grimsvotn Major Quake Swarm, Krisuvik Volcano, Iceland Kirishima Volcano Violently Erupts in Japan Mount Etna Volcano just erupted How Big are Volcano Magma Chambers? The Modern Day Survivalist
Being a ‘survivalist’ these days, does not necessarily or automatically conjure up visions of Rambo trekking through the wilderness with shoulders slung with automatic weapons and belts laden with bullets all the while surviving by eating bugs and edible wild plants… Instead, there has been a noticeable movement of ordinary folks whose eyes have opened and are seeing for the first time the bigger picture of ‘the system’ which is designed to keep them slaves to the masters who control the money and the world itself. To become a modern survivalist, it’s really pretty darn easy, and sensible. By my own definition, I would dare say that the majority of people just a handful of decades ago would be considered modern-day survivalists by today’s standards. Does this mean that to be a survivalist or prepper, or preparedness minded, that we have to live like they did – way back when? No, of course not. Being a modern day survivalist, we can continue to work within the same system that is trying to make us slaves, but instead we simply outsmart it. It’s really quite easy to do actually. Want to know how? All you have to do is rid yourself of all debt. Period. End of story. I’m sure that most of you reading this have debt in one form or another. That’s not meant to be a dig on you, it’s just a reality that has been subconsciously forced upon most people by various calculated means. Debt is the life blood of the system. It needs debt to even exist. If you can find a way to rid your debt, you will be stunned by the liberation that you will feel in your gut. Without debt, you are entirely in control of your destiny. To be a modern day survivalist, you don’t need to have a bug-out location, or a survival retreat, or an arsenal of weapons, or a years worth of food storage, or… Although these things are insurance towards survival under certain conditions, the primary path to survivalism is not to be beholden to anyone else (no debt), and, you need the ability to adapt. The way to get out of debt is pretty straight forward. It involves will power, and cannot be done unless you really want it. It will require sacrifice, time, and lifestyle change, but the end result will be orders of magnitude better than the sacrifice you will suffer. The ability to adapt however, is a different story. This is more of an ability to execute actions based around common sensibility, open mindedness, and strategic planning. To survive, you need the ability to adapt. It’s that simple. Some people think that all you need is money and supplies. This is true up to a point. Once the supplies are gone though, unless you have the ability to adapt, you will be ‘done’. The ability to adapt is a mindset and general skill that is learned over time. It’s not as hard as you think… Most people are programmed to think a certain way. People are taught to accept a particular way of doing things and to not question the rationale. Those who question are often chastised. This becomes so ingrained in your psyche that you fail to realize that there is more than one way to get from point A to point B, so-to-speak. Keeping a ‘healthy skepticism’ is a very good thing. Don’t automatically believe or trust what you are told. Use your own sense! The rule-of-thumb is, if something is true or right, it ‘usually’ will ring true. In other words, trust your gut – it’s usually right. The older you get and the more life experience you have, the more often your gut is absolutely ‘right’. Well, you get the idea. It’s food for thought. Open your eyes, and look around you. Dig a little deeper into the ‘why’ things are happening. ‘Follow the money’. Don’t automatically believe that the main-stream is giving you the story in context. Think. Know what it is that is important to you. Consider what it is that really makes you happy. Motivate yourself. Imagine what it will be like when you’re out of debt. Picture yourself in control of your own life with those that you love, doing what is important. It’s about life. Not things. It is the exact opposite of what ‘the system’ is trying to convince you. You may not know it or believe it now, but one day, you certainly will. Let’s hope that it’s not too late. Suggestions How To Survive A Health Scare
Guest Post: by ‘Be Informed’ These ideas have come from what I have seen, and from others around me, to help someone that is trying to recover from an illness, injury, or whatever that has incapacitated them. The following are suggestions for the people trying to help someone recover from ‘a health scare’ and those themselves that are trying to ‘survive a health scare’, and be well and healthy again. 1. Constantly reassure the person recovering that they can and will get better. Even in cases that it seems hopeless, this seems to help. 2. Avoid any stressful situations that would upset the healing process. 3. Try to remove any negative doubts in own mind and the person trying to heal. Keeping doubts slows healing. 4. Even in comatose patients, talking and even singing, whatever the person enjoys try to do. 5. Human touch is very important, the simple act of holding someone’s hand can be extremely comforting, the healing power of touch. 6. Try talking about “the when” the person trying to get back to being healthy is going to be healthy again. You may not believe it, but the subconscious hears this and can help program the inner mind to heal. 7. Tell the person recovering over and over again how much you need them. Many sick people just give up because there is no point of continuing. Knowing that someone truly wants and needs them can inspire someone to get better. 8. Personally forget all the negative feelings about a the ill person, think only good thoughts. It is not proven, but many feel that negative thoughts directly at a person can harm them. 9. Try to not allow people to visit the person that feel it is an obiligation to be there that don’t want to be there. You don’t want someone trying to heal to perceive that there are people around them that find it a burden to be around them. 10. Try to surround the recovering person with favorite familar things that the person enjoys, especially if the person is not at home. 11. Still include the person in your daily life, this will make someone feel not so separated. 12. Be fully supportive of the person trying to heal. 13. Emphasize to the person ANY improvements that you see. 14. There are going to be down days, attempt to focus more on the up days. 15. When someone does lose something like mobility, focus on what they still do have. 16. Even if someone is told there is no chance of recovery, either help the person come to terms with this, or help the person feel that a defeatist attitude like this is not going to help. 17. Sometimes fear will drive a person to constantly asking, “How am I doing?”, or “Am I going to get better?”. This is really when a person needs reassurance, lots of it. 18. Many times fear and frustration will drive a recovering person to become angry and say hurtful things to those trying to help them. Try to be patient and realize muc of what is said is really not meant. 19. Often someone will “clam up” and not talk at all, this doesn’t mean that the person doesn’t want you there, it might be that they just don’t want to talk. 20. The simplest question that many people don’t ask, “What can I do for you to make you feel better?”. 21. Be fully aware that there is an answer for every health problem, you just have to search it out. 22. Modern treatment of illnesses have advanced a lot over the years and recover times much shortened, this is a positive thought to think about. 23. Try thinking about how good you will feel after you or the person ill is well and healthy again. Much recovery has to do with believing you will get well. 24. Positive thinking is very important to clear and not interrupted flow of energy and good circulation of the healing process. 25. Much has been said about the power of laughter, it may be difficult to feel merry when you feel sick, but there are things you can find humorous that will make you feel better. 26. Avoid people that are negative that tell you that you will not get better, your body needs to hear that you ARE healing. 27. If possible find the BEST in their field of medical treatment. 28. Avoid those in the medical profession that will not listen to you and to those concerned about you and won’t take time to answer questions. 29. The old saying get a second opinion is so true, if you are satisified with the recuparation rate, find someone that will help you recover quicker. 30. Do not dismiss without investigation any alternative or conventional means of treatment. 31. Remember, no matter how dire your conditions are, others have been successful treated and fully recovered. 32. Read as much as possible about what has caused to ail you, there may well be something that those treating you have overlooked. 33. Take positive progressivew steps to recovery that focus on each bit of getting better, no matter how small, have patience. 34. Surround the person trying to get better with people that truly mean something to them. 35. See the person and have others see the person as healing as quickly as possible and what it is going to be like to be completely well and healed. 36. Many studies have shown the healing powers of animals, most people have a favorite animal, spending as much time with this animal should help. 37. Part of healing is making your body as purified as possible, try to only put the very healthiest things into your body. 38. Prevention is of course a lot to preventing a condition to begin with, but it also has to do with prevention of having a relapse. Don’t take chances by overdoing anything until you have fully recovered. 39. The human body has remarkable recuperative powers, do whatever is necessary to aid this by putting your healing process as first priority. 40. Whatever has helped you heal before might help you to heal again, your body recognizes this. 41. Have emergency means of continuing to rehabilitate yourself in case society breaks down and you have to treat yourself solely. 42. It may be a bit hypocritical, but try to agree with reasonable things that the person trying to heal might say that you disagree with. Biting your tongue so to speak and a little bit of compromise will do wonders. 43. Try to surround the healing person with healthy people. Being around sick and sicker people that are obviously going to be complaining are going to hinder the getting well process. 44. Make the place(s) that the person is recovering as friendly as possible, and avoid darkness other than at night. The body likes sunlight and light. Avoid S.A.D. seasonal acute depression that occurs when the days grow shorter and there is less light. 45. See the person as healthy as you seen them years ago. People usually looked better when they were younger, this strengthens the image of the person being healthy and well again. 46. Try to get the person back into activities, not of course endangering the healing process, especially that the person was use to and enjoyed. 47. If bad habits led to the sickness, then try to help the ailing person to break the bad habits so it does not happen again. 48. Try to look at the rough times as over with and long behind you, sort of like leaving a place that you did not like and driving away from it. 49. If you can afford it bring little ‘presents’ and encourage others to give little ‘gifts’ to the person on occasion. People like to get things, it shows people do care. This can also be mailed to them. 50. Make any transitions to spending less time with the healing person as gradual as possible as to not shock the person that needs you. The one thing you don’t want is that the person trying to get well to think that you were only there for them because they were sick. Modern Survival Blog related posts ?
Huge Spinning Storm off California… in June!
Having lived in California for 14 years, I have never seen a storm like this during June. It is unheard of. Typically the rainy season has ended long ago, by this time of year. The size of this monster storm is nearly 1,000 miles in diameter and is nearly perfectly symmetrical! California is currently getting pummeled with record breaking rainfall, while the storm is forecast to continue spinning its way east towards the coast. Thunderstorms are forecast for Saturday night and Sunday, which again is highly unusual in California this time of year. The weather events lately around the country, and the world, have been extraordinary and exciting to observe, except for the tragedies that have resulted from some of the severe weather. This particular storm looks to be so wrapped up, it appears similar to a hurricane in the visible satellite imagery from today. It is not a hurricane though. It is a very well defined low-pressure system. Picture Perfect. Carbon Monoxide Detector Law in California
A new law in California, Senate Bill 183, will require all single family homes to have a carbon monoxide detector installed in their homes by July 1. No, there won’t be a new carbon monoxide police force created to check homes (our freedoms haven’t degraded that far yet…), but, you won’t be able to sell a home without one (just like you can’t sell a home today without smoke detectors). Having a carbon monoxide detector makes good sense anyway, because the gas cannot be detected by your nose. It is a silent killer, a colorless odorless gas. You won’t know it until it’s too late, or worse, it could kill you in your sleep. I have had a carbon monoxide detector for awhile now, and feel much more secure knowing that it is always sniffing the air, which is more at risk during the winter months when people are using their heaters, which could malfunction and give off carbon monoxide gas. In the U.S., there are 480 deaths a year while 20,000 people are hospitalized. This is the carbon monoxide detector that I have. I like it because it actually has a readout, which many do not, and the fact that the battery is front-loading (you don’t have to take it off the wall to change the battery). Children and Natural Disasters
Guest Post: by ‘Be Informed’ Children and the way they feel are often forgotten during these perilous times. Kids of all ages are quite perceptive to what is going on but not actually understanding it fully. The horrified adults’ reactions and expressions to these disasters both on the news and from those around them can be extremely taxing on a young person’s nerves. What can you as a parent, guardian, relative, or an adult that a child looks up to both literally and figuratively do to help alleviate children’s anxieties about all the terrible events that seem to continue one after the other with drastic intensity? – Younger people want to know if something ‘bad’ happens that there is some sort of plan there to handle it. Children need to know that they and those around them can recover from something and that they and their families can survive. Have something a ‘plan’ layed out for just in case. – Always include children in the family plan for preparing for any type of disaster. Kids love to be included and feel what they think actually matters. A simple question to a child of, “What do you think?”, or “How can we make this better?” can do wonders to make a kid feel part of everything. Besides this, a lot of children are very bright and their opinions can be of great use. – Most children will respond well to honesty to what could happen as long as there is a solution to the problem. Talking something over with a child in great detail can lessen much unreasonable fear. Many parents will bury their own heads in the sand and not discuss the dangers of say an earthquake. If and when then is an earthquake the child may not know what to do when the shaking starts and freeze up. The parent or adult’s own fear of overly scaring some child could be the difference between that child coming home or not after a disaster such as an earthquake. – Try to always watch disturbing images of disasters that the media will usually over-dramatize with children and talk over with them why everyone feels so awful. In other words when there is great sadness shown on the television explain to the child why you think this is happening, or just talk over what those going through these horrid times are feeling. – Never dismiss a child’s fear as ridiculous. Fear is a horrendous, ugly real feeling that needs to be talked over and not keep bottled up to get even worse. Rational and irrational fears in children and adults alike need to be discussed. A lot of children live in fantasy worlds and when there is even a small area of devastation that occurs the child might see this as the entire world. Logical explanations can help ease unrealistic fears. – Make sure that the school, day care facility, whenever they are staying at has some sort of disaster preparedness ready. Not only is this essential for them, the children are going to personally feel safer knowing that their own home and outside their home is ready for some disaster to happen. Many places are not even fire ready, do not assume it is safe, do research on it. – Have a lot of patience, understanding, and compassion for when children, especially younger ones, do not grasp what is happening with the world. Kid’s minds and senses are not fully developed and much time may be necessary to explain to them what to do when a disaster strikes. Kids need to be trained as adults where to go that is safe when something bad happens. – It seems like every kid has some sort of security blanket that they personally depend on to feel better. Attempt to have what they need there for them when disaster strikes. This can be toy, a pet, a person, whatever will help them feel some comfort. – Try to not ever allow any child or any member of the family, especially the elderly feel alone without somebody there when bad times hit. Alone can also be a helpless state of mind. Fear can drive people of all ages into their shells to hold everything in. Having someone to talk to can at least make someone feel like they are not so alone. Kids see a lot more than their parents give them credit for and don’t think for a minute that kids don’t see and feel what is going on. Just because someone is quiet does not mean that everything is fine. – One thing that is common sense is that when enough is enough, turn off the 24/7 news coverage of some catastrophe and get away from the house. Children as adults become very fatigued after hours of watching the misery and need a break. This of course do not apply if you need emergency information on a constant basis. – One thing that is usually not talked about with children is the financial cost of these disasters that are enormous. So often kids do not understand the value of money and that these disasters can have much impact on the economy and the family budget. Children have to know that these ongoing disasters might run up the cost of everything and that in the future there might not be as much money to spend on things that the kids like. – Something that can make a child feel better and express themselves is to write down or draw the way they feel about a recent tragedy. This will always give you insight to what they are thinking. The more intensity of a drawing of course shows that the cataclysm that occurred is really bothering them badly. – Kids like adults gossip and exaggerate stories. Children’s friends and schoolmates can make up stories that are terrifying and have only a kernel of truth behind them. This is why it is so important to be truthful to a child about what is or what is really happening. – If a child is emotionally up to it explain to them the real consequences of people not being ready for a disaster. Many children do not fully understand death and suffering. Explaining to them that these disasters are nothing to fool around with, and when there are warnings out such as tornadoes, tsunamis, wildfires, whatever teach young people to “LISTEN” and “ACT”. Many teenagers and young adults for example think of themselves as ‘indestructible’, a fatal re-occurrence that seems to be happening more and more often like that individual that was swept away on the west coast of the U.S. by the tsunami. Flood warnings are something especially ignored by those thrill seekers. – The main thought to teach children is that the world is changing and there are going to be many more really dreadful times ahead that are going to be rough. Also that there is going to be someone there listening and helping is so all-important for the security of any child. The old song ‘Stand by me’ truly applies to all ages. People can survive and deal so much better when they have and when they know that there are people there for them no matter what when these nightmares happen. Why So Many Tornado Deaths This Year?
2011 has been a devastating year for tornado related deaths in the U.S., despite years of advancement with early warning technologies, radar technology, and public alert systems. Perhaps all this science is enabling too much of a sense of false security and complacency. During April 25-28 more than 300 people lost their lives in the South and the Midwest. Just weeks later, a monster tornado took 142 lives around Joplin, MO. This is now the deadliest year for tornadoes since 1950 based on National Weather Service figures. Advanced radar is now able to provide warnings of as much as 20 minutes. So, why have there been so many tornado deaths this year, given our current state of technology? The answer seems to break down into four parts. La-Nina, Urban sprawl, Time-of-day, and Complacency. La-Nina and Tornadoes La-Nina events since 1950 1974, similar to 2011, produced record tornadoes, and also occurred during a La-Nina ocean cycle. La Nina is a cycle whereby the surface temperatures of the ocean become cooler than normal (by 3 to 5 degrees C), off of the coast of South America in the east-central Pacific. Among other things, this affects the location of the jet stream and the boundaries of cool and warm moist air that produces storms. Urban Sprawl and Tornadoes It is plain to see the urban sprawl that has occurred over the past few decades. Where there was once open land, there are now countless housing developments radiating out from the city centers. In days of old, a given tornado may have ripped through farmland and never made the evening news. Today, the odds are much higher that any given tornado will happen across developed land. Time-of-day and Tornadoes Most tornadoes will develop in the afternoon and early evening, after the sun has heated the earth beneath, adding lift to the mixture of catalysts needed to spin up a tornado. Tornadoes usually occur during a time-of-day when they can be seen (except for rain-wrapped tornadoes), and a time of day when people are up and about – often not even at home – typically alert to the weather around them. When a tornado strikes at night, at home, especially when people are asleep, there is often little time to take action and assess the situation. A public weather hazard alert radio will surely help to save your life, so long as you have one, it’s turned on, and you have a plan of action. Complacency and Tornadoes Many people believe that “it will never happen to me”, and underestimate the risks and odds of being involved in a disaster like a tornado. We have become dependent upon technology, and often confuse these technologies as though they are safety nets. They are tools, for sure, but a ‘net’, no. You still must take action after being warned. Take Action I have never lived in an area at risk for tornadoes. But if I did, my home would definitely have one of two things… either an underground basement (with a secure area) or an underground storm shelter. ‘Life’ is worth more than money, and I would do whatever it took to be sure my home was equipped with one or the other. I’m a bit of a weather nut anyway, and if under a tornado watch or severe thunderstorm watch, I would be following the radar, and would be aware of the progression of the storm in relation to where I am at the moment. Even if out and about – away from home – today’s cell phones can typically receive radar updates from a given local outlet. I would have my favorite one bookmarked for quick access. After seeing the horrific damage in Joplin, MO, simply moving to a ‘safe’ part of the house did not provide any safety whatsoever. EVERYTHING was shredded horizontal. The ONLY safety would have been somewhere below the surface, underground. Home Door Stop Alarm
I happened across this simple but effective security device while browsing Amazon today. It is an ingenious little door-stop wedge shaped device which will alert a very loud alarm (120 db) if someone opens the door. This door stop alarm is small, lightweight and portable. You could throw it in your bag on trips, for use at your hotel for example. If you don’t already have a home security system, this inexpensive door alarm will likely scare away just about any burglar who happened to pick your residence as next prey. GE 50246 Smart Home Door Stop Alarm One reason that I had installed a security alarm system in my home was not only for protection while away, but protection while I sleep at night. A skilled burglar may enter your home quietly enough as not to wake you from your sleep, leaving little time to react once you do hear him. Even though I keep a safely stored firearm near my bedside, it won’t do me much good if I awaken with only seconds to react. Here are what others have said about this simple little door stop alarm: Even though I keep a gun next to my bed, it really bothered me that if someone managed to get into my house, I probably wouldn’t wake up in time to get to it. (I’m a VERY deep sleeper and my bedroom’s on the 2nd floor) On our recent trip to Egypt and Jordan we stayed at the St. Catherine’s Plaza Hotel in Jordan, the hotel was not very secure and had no added security locks or chains on the door. It was 7 am, I was just waking up when I heard steps coming up our staircase outside and then there was a key in our door and our door being unlocked. We had set the GE Smarthome Door alarm the night before and of course when they tried to enter our room the alarm went off scaring them away, I could hear them running very fast down the stairway. I am so glad I had bought this for our trip or we may have had an unwanted stranger in our room. I highly recommend this alarm! Looking for an easy to use, reliable door entry alarm with no complicated mounting? Get the GE SmartHome Door Stop Alarm. You won’t be disappointed. Afer batteries are activated, you’re done. Just put by your door. So sensitive to pressure that I’ve often scared myself by picking it up the wrong way. 50 Ways To Prepare For Survival
Guest Post: by ‘Be Informed’ As more catastrophes seem to be accelerating more and more people are becoming convinced that the collapse of society is only a matter of time. The true survivalist can feel that they are ready for the chaos, but without actually experiencing these extreme adversities firsthand are they? In the military soldiers are conditioned and trained beforehand and made to be as prepared as possible for the real hardships on and off the battlefield. The survivalist can to be more mentally and physically prepared for the falling apart of civilization that so many survivalists and the general public feels is inevitable. Self reliance also has to do with being ready for the sudden loss of everything we all have become way too accustomed to. Experiencing a type of mock realism can get you more mentally prepared for when society starts to quickly disintegrate around you. The following 50 tips (suggestions) should help you, ‘the survivalist’ cope better when things do start to fall apart. 1. See what it is like to go without the utilities such as electricity by turning them off for at least a couple of hours. 2. Go at least 24 hours without electronic conveniences; no computer, no television, no cell phone, etc. This will be a wake up call for many. 3. The internet will not be there after many catastrophes, become use to receiving information from other sources such as books. 4. Spend some nights using only candles and or battery operated lights to illuminate the darkness. 5. Start storing rainwater and start watering your plants and garden with it. 6. Try cooking some of your meals using a solar oven, barbecue, fire pit, something not dependent on the electric or gas companies. 7. Flush the toilet for one day or more using only water you have previously stored, or use a portable toilet. 8. Instead of throwing away a piece of damaged clothing, try to repair it, sew it, then wear it again. 9. Take any household item and write down every creative way you can use it. 10. Find other means of some of your trash disposal, something else rather than the city or county trash pick up services. 11. Have a fake imaginary illness and fictionally treat that sickness with only what you have available to you in your home. 12. Gather your family and even your friends together that feel like you do, and see what it like for all of you to be confined to a smaller space. 13. Use ‘other” means of cooling or heating your home for a few days that is of course safe. 14. Actually walk or bicycle to run some of your errands other than using a motor vehicle. 15. Start spending some very quiet time alone. You may have to be alone after ‘it’ happens. 16. Try using alternative means of bathing occasionally, like using one of those solar showers, or heating water over a fire to be used to bathe with. 17. See what ingenious gadget made from junk you can think of to make hard times easier. 18. Try washing dishes and clothes on occasion without using the dishwasher or washing machine, dry clothes on a clothes line. 19. Experiment by trying to purify dirty polluted water, without drinking it, and see how clean you can get it. 20. Scavenger hunt. Take some time and collect everything, not hazardous, you find on the ground and ask yourself, what can I do and use what I have? 21. Take along a pad of paper and write down everything you see at a park or recreation area. Observation skills will help you stay alive better after chaos breaks loose. 22. Try to locate someplace off the beaten path using only a paper map, compass, or landmarks. 23. Spend some days outdoors when the weather is miserable (not dangerous), like raining all day long, you may have to live this way in the future. 24. See how fast you can get your essentials together and ready to leave. 25. Try omitting the “professional” weather forecasts and get one of the those pocket weather forecaster that goes by the clouds and wind direction and make your own weather forecasts. 26. If you plan to stay where you are, thoroughly become familiar with every street, landmark, trees, houses, etc. within 2 miles of your home, walk the area often. 27. For awhile see what it is like to have only enough water and food to sustain you, only rations for a day or two. 28. Safety test your physical limits by seeing how far you can walk with a backpack of supplies. 29. You could be confined to a small area around your home, write down everything outside within eyesight you may have to eat to survive. 30. Start saving up every spare part; screws, springs, nails, etc. and fix something only using what you have stored. 31. Get use to eating “safe” outdoor plants, berries, edibles and acquire a taste only for them. Outdoor food is there for the pickings, you just have to know where to look. Also take classes on identifying safe plants to eat. 32. Eat at least one or more meal each week made from food that has not been processed. 33. Attempt to get supplies for free. This is good for your scrounging skills. 34. Go to garage sales, flea markets and try to pay for things by trading rather than using money. Sharpening your barter skills. 35. Start a trading system with other survival minded people. These are wonderful ways to practice post apocalyptic commerce. 36. Without endangering your safety, learn the ways that local homeless people get by with what they have and can find. 37. Go to your local supermarket and make a mental map of the store and where you can go as quickly as possible to get what you need when panic buying starts. 38. Find places to rapidly hide your food and supplies that are not already hidden. Desperate people will expect you give them everything you have, or will just take it from you. 39. Put together a safe room and spend some serious time there, only coming out to go to the bathroom. 40. Drive, walk, travel beforehand all your planned “escape routes” and calculate times to reach each place. 41. Have supplies ready, such as plywood to board up windows, to secure yourself from intruders that will try to break in. 42. Establish, made a list of human leeches around you that will take and give nothing in return and regard them as threats to your survival supplies. 43. Those with small children and pets, train them to go to a safe area by command. Even most animals are smart enough to listen. 44. Federal, state, local danger drills are way too infrequent for your mind to take hold. Make your emergency drills a daily or 3 times a week event. 45. Depending on your location write down in great detail what you can expect in various disastrous situations. This helps to prepare dealing with worst case scenarios. 46. Practice staying calm and thinking straight, breathing exercises, anything to keep you as collected during emergency situations. 47. Spend some nights sleeping outside, this can be in your backyard, camping trips, whatever to prepare you for when you are stuck outside. 48. Instead of using electronic devices, made a habit of using a piece of paper and a pen or pencil to write down things that are important and not important. 49. To avoid total boredom with this does happen learn to play various card and classic board games, anything that can entertain you and your family and friends that does not plug in. 50. Become a master of learning human idiosyncrasies (mannerisms), facial expressions, movements. This is invaluable when dealing with irrational and probably unsafe people after a calamity occurs. The truly “ready” survivalist should be training themselves to be prepared to undergo things that are going to be vastly different and very difficult to adjust to and handle. By using some or all of these 50 prep tips now and before the aftermath of “the nightmare” that is coming, you will be more adapt to handling it. Add your personal preparation exercises to the 50 to make you even more mega disaster ready. How is La Nina Affecting Food Prices and What Do We Need to Do to Prepare for it?
Guest Post: by Kalen Smith La Nina is a phenomenon where the surface temperature of the ocean drops significantly in parts of the Pacific. It has a major impact on the world’s weather and typically makes an appearance every few years. This year’s La Nina has been particularly hard on people around the world. Some of the effects of La Nina have included: • Droughts that have covered the entire state of Texas and many parts of the southern United States. These are the worst experienced in almost fifty years. • The worst droughts that China and Europe have experienced in over a century. • Record flooding in Brazil, Australia and many other countries around the world. These events are having a major impact on our world. Wheat prices have increased over 70% in the past year, while corn prices have tripled. Many areas of the world are being affected by sudden shifts in weather patterns to the point of famine and food riots. The United States has not been immune to these events. Here are some tips for getting through La Nina without losing everything to rising food prices: 1. Stock up on your basic staples. Food prices may be high now, but they can get a lot worse. Now is the time to start buying lots of dry foods and store them before prices get out of control. You can also try getting a larger freezer so that you can freeze many of the foods that you can store other essential foods as well. 2. Get used to eating rice. Rice is one of the few commodities that have actually dropped in price. This could actually be what has kept the world from experiencing a global famine in the past few months. 3. Become self-sufficient. This could become an essential strategy if things get really bad. You don’t want to be at the mercy of the nation’s food supply if prices get really out of control. Consider growing your own food or raising your own livestock so that you can isolate yourself from increases in food prices. 4. Always take advantage of sales and discounts on food. As expensive as food is, you should always be able to get deals. Check newsletters and coupons for coupons and any other discounts you can take advantage of. Many stores will offer regular discounts, so get accustomed to get accustomed to following their sales trends. La Nina is expected to occur over the next couple of months. It may be over by the end of June, but the effects of it are likely to have an impact on us long after that. Many of the effects of La Nina, such as the droughts in Texas, are expected to last at least through the summer. The food supply is likely to be significantly smaller over the next year and food prices will probably impact us for some time to come.
