Earthquakes 2010 Up 133 Percent

Permalink Earthquakes between magnitude 5.0 and 6.9 are still up and occurring 133 percent more frequently than average statistics so far during 2010. Earthquakes between magnitude 5.0 and 9.9 are occurring 125 percent more frequently than average statistics so far during 2010. The last time I analyzed the 2010 data (during the end of May), the overall frequency of occurrence was somewhat higher than this analysis

Data Recovery Made Simple

Most of you must already know that the data you save on your computer is being practically stored on media like magnetic disks, hard disks, RAID configurations of hard disks. Data can also ve stored on , floppy disks, tapes, CDs, DVDs and other types of media.

Generally speaking, data recovery is the process of restoring the data that has previously been stored on such media types, but, due to some sorry events, has become inaccessible or corrupt. There are many ways to destroy the data stored on hard disks or any other media type. Just think of the terrible damage that virus attacks can cause! Not to speak about accidents like floods or fires! Fortunately, there is hope! Mankind has developed several techniques in order to recover the missing or damaged data. The data can be recovered by means of hardware or software techniques, either by a simple user or, in the more serious cases, by a data recovery specialist.

The main helper in the matter of data recovery is the fact that a deleted file is not actually deleted from the storage media. You can only delete the entry in the index pointing to the actual location of the file that has been erased. Not many people are aware that the file itself is left intact! The only thing you must worry about is that any other activity one performs on that particular computer could endanger the data, as it can easily overwrite the location where the file was stored. This is the main reason why it is highly advisable to have a data recovery specialist attempt to solve such a problem, and not the inexperienced user.

Therefore, prevention is the key to all of your problems! Why get in trouble when you can avoid it! It is advisable to build up a disaster recovery plan and to always have backups done. Of course, these backups should be stored in another location than the main data.

Another useful tip would be immediately stopping whenever you believe that you have experienced any loss of data. Any software that you install or run on the computer can cause this problem, so make sure to report all your previous actions to the data recovery specialist. That is if you follow my advice and never try to recover the damaged data yourself! Otherwise no one will ever be able to save you!

Why Managing A Small Business Can Be Tough

Running a small business is tough because the buck stops at you for absolutely everything. The difference between success and failure can be a fine line. A small mistake in the first two years can knock a small business owner for six whilst a large new customer can propel you very quickly to new horizons.
Small business owners need to deal with all aspects of the business from book keeping, marketing, innovation, distribution, finance and customers that refuse to pay. Large companies have a separate department for each of the above tasks.
If you make a mistake in your record keeping the Inland Revenue comes knocking on your door. They work on the rule that you have read all their pamphlets and do not class ignorance as a defence. What a bunch of losers!
Countless sleepless nights, arguments with bank managers, disputes with suppliers and angry customers can all lead to stress overload.
And this is just the start, especially if you have gone into business with a friend! Make sure that everything you have agreed on is in writing so that further down the road there are no disputes about what was agreed. Better still do not go into business with a friend!
The first couple of years are the hardest as most banks have very tough lending criteria for small businesses. Do not hesitate to change your bank manager or even your bank if you are not getting a sympathetic response. Not all banks are the same. Some even offer free banking for the first couple of years!
Having a good accountant who will not start billing you the second you call, can help a lot. If you have friend who also happens to be an accountant then this could prove invaluable. Do not be scared to change your accountant or lawyer at the start. Building the right relationships at the beginning is critical.
Another problem small business face is absenteeism. If one member of staff is of ill it can reduce the entire workforce by fifty percent! It’s a great idea to have someone you can rely on as a backup. Another great idea is to possibly take on two part timers rather than one employee. They can both act as back ups for each other.
It’s important that you plan your growth. Obviously we would all like to see really good growth but if a business grows too fast it can lead to disaster. In some cases you might have to rein it until cash flows allow for another spurt.
Factoring your debts – where a finance company pays you upfront 80% of any outstanding invoices and then does the job of chasing payments can really help here.
Never be afraid to change tracks if the something is not working. If you are selling products that are not making you money – change direction. If you have a customer who takes up too much time for very little profit – dump him. If you have a supplier who keeps letting you down – find a new one. If you have an obnoxious employee – find someone else now before you waste too much time training the wrong person.
Be creative and always on the lookout for that special idea, promotion material or something different to get your customers talking about you.
Once you have run your own company successfully and got used to making your own decisions, it can be very exhilarating & chances are that you will never work for someone again.

Taking the Long View Approach to Information Technology Career Planning

An organization’s success depends on its people. The stronger the knowledge and skills of the individuals the stronger the organization becomes.  The United States economic downturn has caused some companies to downsize—which is creating a paradigm shift in the way people manage their careers and their jobs.  Organizations are no longer as willing to provide the necessary funding to individuals for career and skills development.
Economic changes are inevitable and without the necessary skills individuals will lack the career edge they require to survive in this current job market. You must first be able to recognize the driving forces creating change in our economy to quickly adapt and create a career edge.  A classic mistake is for an individual to think about only one career path at a time leaving themselves to the whims of the companies who are downsizing.
Individuals are now forced to take a new view at how they are managing their careers and create new career paths to broaden career choices. During this time of unprecedented economic transformation organizations must now evolve in order to do business and adapt. The importance of flexibility and adaptability expand down to the individual level and in order to quickly adapt you must first learn to manage change and your career.
Change is the law of life and those who look to the past or present are certain to miss the future.
~~John F Kennedy
You do not want to set yourself off on the wrong path—or you might find yourself left with no career options. You must create forward-thinking ways to transform your approach to career development and avoid a career disaster through taking the long view approach to career planning.  The long view approach incorporates future change by projecting current economic, political, and technological drivers into futures scenarios. This has been called strategic planning, scenario planning, and strategic flow charting.  These same principles can be applied to career planning.  This is not a short term investment—but an investment that will help you stay ahead of paradigm shifts by recognizing the drivers of change before they happen and quickly chart a new course for your career path.
To begin you must first look for drivers of change in the organizational landscape of your company. Then research and list all of these changes you see coming in career trends.  My career path research found a recent article in Money Magazine—which listed Information Security as the 10th fastest growing profession in the United States with a projected growth of 27 percent between the year 2006 and 2016. I also located an article in Government Information Security News that outlines an effort by the office of personnel management (OPM) to retain and hire Information Security experts.
In addition, Information technology is also one of the stronger careers with less unemployment rates than the national average. A recent quarterly report by Robert Half Technology IT hiring Index and Skills report states that 83% of companies plan to maintain their current IT staffing levels.
The second step in the planning process is to use your creative energy to determine risks and develop new ideas, and career options.  By determining the risks, you can start building a what-if flow chart of outcomes.  Taking a calculated risk can advance your career; however, if you fear the unknown you can gain confidence by simply evaluating the evidence concerning future outcomes.  If any of these outcomes look positive start testing some your ideas. These are all risk-taking strategies that will work but not without certain amount of strategic planning.
Take calculated risks. That is quite different from being rash.
~~George S Patton
Finally after you have chosen your new career path, continue to strengthen your position by face-to-face networking, and personal branding.
Taking the long view will allow you to proactively manage your career. Remember that your career must be re-evaluated based on driving forces and quickly evolve based on current and future career trends. To succeed you must be the one leading career change and not just getting caught up in it.

All Natural Health – Helping You Achieve Your Dream

Trying to convert yourself to an all natural lifestyle is fraught with hazards, but trying to convert your family as well, can be daunting, particularly if they are dragging their feet.
Where do you start? How important is an all natural diet? Whatever is it, anyway?
Supplements come in all shapes and sizes. How do you work out which ones are the best value for money?
What are the effective alternatives to medical treatment?
If these are some of the questions that you’re asking yourself, you’ve come to the right place!
One of the best ways of getting more and quality information is to sign up for an ezine, which is a newsletter sent by email.
As you plough through the sea of information available on all natural health, you might like to consider the following points to ensure you’re getting quality information.
is the ezine free? is the ezine regular, preferably weekly? does the ezine content contain useful and free tips? has the author tried the items he/she is promoting? does the content teach you anything? does the author explain his/her reasons for putting forward an argument? do the reasons sound sensible or plausible? do you look forward to receiving the ezine and enjoy reading it?
Some ezines can be just a platform for an author to voice his/her personal opinions, which may not teach you anything.
Some ezines are all about persuading you to buy, without giving you any useful information.
It’s worth mentioning that most companies are well aware that putting ‘natural’, ‘all natural’, ‘all natural ingredients’ on their packets of highly processed food is quite legal, even though misguiding. They are well aware of the pull the word ‘natural’ has, as people strive for better health.
So you need to be able to decipher what is genuine and what isn’t.
Instead of looking at the pretty packet cover and convincing words, ask yourself, how far removed from the original food growing, are the contents of this packet?
Check out the ingredients.
For instance, a packet of food may list a lot of E numbers (normally synthetic colours, preservatives,) which is best to avoid. Or it may list the isolated nutrients it has added, such as calcium, selenium, etc. This is also best to avoid as synthetic nutrients aren’t absorbed easily, so you’re buying expnsive urine.
Some packets will list just the food in the ingredients. Although this doesn’t tell you if the food has been heat treated, it does ensure you know what went into it.
For instance a packet of dried apricots is likely to contain sulphur dioxide – a preservative that can have a serious impact on some people.
An all natural packet of dried apricots will only contain apricots. Nothing else.
Another example is a multi vitamin or mineral supplement. Check the ingredients. If they list minerals or vitamins, chances are this has come out of a laboratory. In my opinion, that’s where they should be returned. If the ingredients list plants, then that is a nutritious supplement, one you can easily digest and utilise as you evolved to gain your nutrients from plants.
Always look deeper, always take a peep behind the scenes. Don’t trust anyone. Go by how you feel about something, not what you’re told. And when you do your research, don’t be put off by the negative comments. Nobody agrees with everything. Instead look at the content of the positive comments. Is it purely a sales pitch? Or is there some quality information available that doesn’t benefit the author?
The rewards of an all natural lifestype can be enormous and highly satisfying. Don’t be put off by the trials and tribulations along the way. The goal is worth the effort.

What Is Diamond? Where Is It Found?

What is Diamond?
Diamond is a colourless exceptionally hard mineral (but often tinted yellow, orange, blue, brown, or black by impurities), found in certain igneous rocks esp. the kimberlites of South Africa. It is used as a gemstone, as anabrasive, and on the working edges of cutting tools. Composition: carbon. Formula: C. Crystal structure: cubic. Name derived from the Greek adamas meaning invincible. Relative density 3.50- 3.52. Cleavage eminent along octahedral faces. Fracture conchoidal. Tenacity brittle. Lustre brilliantly adamantine. Refractive index 2.417- 2.419. Birefringence and pleochroism: none (cubic). Dispersion strong 0.044. Diamond crystals form as cubes, octahedra , the most common gem form, and dodecahedra. Colourless to yellow diamonds which have a strong absorbtion line in the violet end of the spectrum are members of the Cape series. Where is it found?
The most famous diamond bearing country is South Africa. The first diamond was reported in 1866. By 1869 an 83.5 carat diamond had been found and was named The Star of Africa. It was subsequently cut into a pear shape brilliant weighing 47.74 carats. The Golconda area of Southern India has been the source of somefamous diamonds such as the Koh-i-nor (mountain of light 186cts cut to 108.92 cts and now in the Tower of London) and Jehangir. Diamond is widespread in Brazil, most stones being small but of good gem quality. Alluvial diamonds have been found in most states of the USA. White and fancy coloured diamonds such as pinks and pinkish browns are mined at Argyle in North Western Australia. Other important producers are Russia, now the fourth largest producer, and China.

How diamonds are formed?
Diamond is formed at great depth in the earth, between 150 and 300 km below the surface and at great temperatures and pressures. By a kind of volcanic eruption the diamonds were pushed up through volcanic pipes of diamond bearing rock such as kimberlite. With gradual erosion kimberlite chimneys were exposed at the earths surface.

Phuket Vacation Lodge- Surviving the Storm and Living On!!

Phuket, the largest island in the country of Thailand, is perhaps one of the most visited islands on planet earth. It is also the wealthiest island amongst a herd of islands present along the southern coastline. The warmth of the people and the scenic locals of the island truly make it a treat for tourists on vacation. People all across Europe, USA and the entire west are totally caught on by Phuket and are increasing their visits to the island more and more.

However, Phuket has had its fair share of tragedies as well. Almost 5 years ago, on December 26th 2004, a powerful tsunami struck the entire southern coastline, causing a tremendous amount of devastation and destruction on the little island. The tragedy was so immense that the after effects can still be felt on the beautiful island of Phuket. And of course, it has left deep marks on the psyches of the people of Phuket. But the question is, has the city been able to forget the past and move on to a new future?

The answer to that question most definitely is, yes, it has. Many resorts in Phuket have been remarkable in its transformation post the deadly tsunami and the efforts have been paying amazing dividends to the tourism of the island. Post the tsunami, number of tourists visiting Phuket has increased more than what it was before the tsunami. The post tsunami devastations can still be seen along the wonderful coastline of the Patong beach though. It is reminiscent of the time when Phuket was tested as a united island, and of how it has survived to tell the tale. Wherever there was destruction, new hotels and cafes have opened up and filled the void that was left behind by the deadly tidal wave.

Along the coastline, the street markets have been put up again and it comes as no surprise that they are bustling and full of life yet again with tourists and foreigners trying to get their hands on a part of the legacy that Phuket has acquired post the tsunami. The disaster management teams who have been working day and night to minimize the effects of the tsunami hit areas have really been helping the island pull back to its original glory and gather attention as it always has been able to do among the world map.

Often it is said that it not how hard you get hit that matters. It is how fast when you get up that matters. And that is exactly the story of Phuket as a united solid unit. It has been able to get up after being hit hard by nature. And it has proved that the will to provide people the best hospitality in the world and give their lives joy works for them. And they are the best at it when it comes to entertaining people from all parts of the world.

Finding the Best Stock Market Investing Advice

In a recent Market Watch article, Jane Bryant Quinn asks…”what about the financial planners who advise pre- and newly post-retirement clients to hold a substantial portfolio stocks? Are there flaws in that asset allocation?”
“The resounding answer: NO. They’ve kept the faith in a financial portfolio that’s 50 percent to 60 percent invested in stocks for people facing a retirement of 20 to 40 years.” Will investors still believe them when the next wave is over? The current problem is that those heavily invested portfolios are now devastated, leaving many investors, especially retirees, asking themselves why they listened to their advisor’s stock market investing advice in the first place.

Are these trusted financial advisors working with the best interest of their client in mind as they give you investing advice, or are they driven to “annuitize assets” to earn wrap fees or commission trails? I have a feeling 2009 will be a record year for an exodus from major wire houses.
The stock market involves a whole mix of human emotions: hope, ignorance, greed, fear, desire, dreams and aspirations. Markets reflect how we feel about the future. Why are periods of overvaluation followed by poor or negative returns? Because trees don’t grow to the sky. Everything has its limits, and your advisor should know this.
When enough people realize this, they begin to take their money off the table. Then the market comes back to trend. Finally, when all hope seems lost, the market becomes a bargain again. Savvy investors will keep their powder dry until then. Patience will pay high dividends to the educated investor. DON’T MISS YOUR OPPORTUNITY to profit from this landslide!

Skiing Off Piste in La Grave?

Clear blue sky, crispy crystal snow, fresh air and lots of fun, all these make skiing a highly enjoyable and appreciated sport, that attracts thousands of tourists on the mountain slopes every year. Yet, some of them are looking not just for fun, but for adventure.  These are the people who choose off-piste skiing, who challenge the mountain in a race full of adrenaline, running the risk of provoking an avalanche for the sake of enjoying a descent on an untouched slope.  These are the risk takers that throw caution to the wind in favour of a good time, and many of them choose the infamous La Grave skiing area, situated in the Alps.
If you want to go skiing in La Grave, you’d better think twice for the sake of your own safety and wellbeing.  You could be there all alone, with nothing but your skies and backpack, in the middle of a white ocean, and your life depends on all your skiing knowledge and experience, which in some cases, can be less than you think. The highest risk to produce an avalanche is when there are several layers of snow, some older than the others, with different levels of density. In such a case, if you change direction suddenly, you may cut the most recent layer of snow with your skis, and thus dislocate it. Consequently, never cross a slope from one side to the other, because you may dislocate disaster. Or when skiing at high speed on slopes with fresh snow, you can raise a powder snow avalanche that makes air unbreathable because of the fine snow crystals that fill the atmosphere. Sometimes a few simple precautions like these can save your life.
In order to feel safer on your off-piste skiing expedition, there are a few things that you need to know. Always check on the snow conditions beforehand. Go online, and make sure you look at a report for La Grave, which should be easy enough to find. Has it recently snowed? What is the risk of avalanche in the area? What was the local weather like in the last days? Get information on how warm the weather can get at noon for instance. Make sure there haven’t been strong winds that might have affected the snow stability on the slope where you want to go skiing. Open your eyes for cornices and cracks and listen to possible sounds of the snow mass whilst your out there.  If you remain alert, you’ll stand a better chance of avoiding disaster.
Avoid noise in areas with high avalanche risk. When trying to communicate with other members of your group, never shout if you’re far from them, because sound vibrations can cause inner breaks in the snow mass if already unstable. Make sure your transceivers are fully charged so that you may ask for help if in need. And last, but not least, wear colourful skiing clothes, avoid white, silver or gray equipment, that make you almost invisible by lack of contrast.  Reds, or Oranges are probably the best colours to opt for, to give that contrast that could be life saving. Thus you’ll be more easily detectable on the slope, and in case you’re in an emergency situation, rescue teams can find you more quickly. You’ll be a speck of colour in the silver vastness of snow, identifiable from miles away to aid your rescue, and potentially save your life.

Farm Animals and Climate Change

Farm Animals and Climate Change Dr.Kedar Karki Introduction At least a billion of the world’s poorest people depend on animals for food, fiber, income, social status, security, and companionship. Climate change is expected to cause an increase in weather-related disasters and extreme weather events, such as droughts, heat waves, storms, desertification, and increases in insect infestations. Long-term changes in climate will jeopardize the future of all animals—including those in oceans, on farms, in forests, in wilderness areas, and in our homes. All climate change related hazards and their related disasters have a negative impact on animals. Animal agriculture the raising of animals for food, clothing, and draught power is a major contributor to climate change, responsible for 18% of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (9 % CO2, 37 % methane and 65 % N2O). Climatic changes will have a negative impact on all animals, but particularly livestock who are associated with certain activities that directly contribute to climate change. It is therefore imperative that animal agriculture practices and the welfare of animals be considered when developing climate change policies and programmes, both as potential victims and causes. Such policies and programmes that minimize the impact animal production has on the environment should not be at the expense of animals and/or their caregiver’s welfare. The climate debate may lead to a greater increase in intensive production practices at the expense of medium and long term environmental and animal welfare friendly extensive production methods. Harming the health and well-being of animals directly compromises the societal, economical, physiological, and cultural aspects of humans. Effects of Climate Change on the Spread and Emergence of Animal Diseases As global temperatures increase, the effects will be quite complex and vary from region to region. Though the extent of these effects is uncertain, it is known that those communities and regions with the least resources, such as rural agricultural areas , will be the most vulnerable to climate change. Warmer and wetter weather (particularly warmer winters) will increase the risk and occurrence of animal diseases, as certain species who serve as disease vectors, such as biting flies and ticks, are more likely to survive year-round. Certain existing parasitic diseases may also become more prevalent, or their geographical range may spread, if rainfall increases. This may contribute to an increase in disease spread, including Zoonotic diseases. Transportation of animals for personal, entertainment, or agricultural purposes also increases the possibility for the introduction and subsequent presence of diseases and pests, including ticks and parasites, previously considered exotic. The viral infection Bluetongue Disease, for example, was once only a threat in Africa, now affects cattle and sheep in the whole of Europe. Conditions inherent in industrial animal agriculture facilities can increase the emergence of diseases that affect humans and animals alike. Outbreaks of diseases such as Foot & Mouth Disease or Avian Influenza affect very large numbers of animals and contribute to further degradation of the environment and surrounding communities’ health and livelihood. Effects of Climate Change on Farm Animals and Their Caregivers Animals are intrinsically dependent on the environment, and any fluctuations in weather and climate can affect them through water and land changes, such as desertification, and feed and water availability, access, and appropriateness. Climate change will not only impact the health and welfare of animals, but also the more than billion people who depend on them. Desertification and climate change are inextricably linked through feedbacks between land degradation and precipitation: less rain leads to soil compaction and hardening, making the land unable to absorb rainwater. This could have disastrous effects as rain becomes less frequent but heavier. The increased use of chemical-based agricultural inputs, including artificial fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides, and their impact on soil and water quality will likely exacerbate the effects of climate change by further degrading other ecosystems such as coral reefs and rivers, decreasing the land’s ability to produce food. It is much easier for farmers in developed countries to endure a climatic setback than those in poorer nations such as Malawi, where 80% of the population lives in rural areas and approximately 40% of the economy is supported by rain-fed agriculture. For example, as grazing areas dry up in sub-Saharan Africa, pastoralists will be forced to travel farther to find food. Cattle, goats, camels, sheep, and wildlife dependant on access to grazing areas for food will suffer. This will lead to greater conflict between people and between people and animals.Resources must be made available to educate and prepare for change if the negative impacts of climate change on animals suffering is to be minimized. Effects of Farm Animal Agriculture on Climate Change Not only are the effects of climate change on animal welfare important, but also the contributions of animal production to climate change due to the contribution to GHGs and energy consumption. Unfortunately, many studies and recommendations do not take into account multiple causes and effects, thus significantly restricting the potential outcomes. Livestock agriculture accounts for 35-40% of methane and nearly 70% of nitrous oxide worldwide, gases that arise mainly from the digestive processes of animals, and animals’ waste. Levels will continue to rise as animal numbers grow to meet the increasing demands for meat and milk from developing countries such as China and India. Agricultural emissions of nitrous oxide from manure and the production of artificial fertilisers are projected to increase by 35-60% by 2030 . Some developing regions will have very large increases, including parts of East Asia with an increase of 135% from enteric fermentation and 86% for manure management. Deforestation for animal production accounts for 89.5% of all CO2 livestock related emission and 34% of CO2, CH4, and N2O emissions. The increased production of beef in South America and soybean production for feed transported to Europe is leading to deforestation of the rain forest, which has a great impact on the emission of GHG. Soybean production for feed also causes losses of biodiversity and chemical pollution. Western Europe is the only region whose emissions are falling and predicted to continue to decrease by 2020, but that does not include these areas used for feed production in other parts of the world. With good management, animals genetically suited to their environments and raised in low-density systems can play important roles in proper land management through consuming biomass unsuitable for human consumption. Grazing animals can contribute to a rich biodiversity, fertilizing the soil, and improving the land’s ability to collect and absorb water. Agricultural and pasture lands can act as “carbon sinks,” pulling and storing carbon from the atmosphere. Sustainable land management practices, such as agro forestry, silvo-pastures, and growing cover crops, can prevent carbon from being lost. By contrast, poorly managed, high-density and intensive practices and systems are typically inhumane and destructive to the environment. Ensuring adequate animal welfare can also help to reduce GHG emissions and ultimately the future sustainability of meat, egg, and milk production. While animal agriculture emits significant amounts of CO2 through the production of fertilizers and feed, and the energy required to heat and cool industrial operations and run farm machinery, the farm animal agriculture sector emits enormous quantities of nitrous oxide and methane emissions from animal manure, methane emissions from animals’ digestion, and nitrous oxide emissions from the artificial fertilizer used to grow feed crops for animals. There is a great deal of research demonstrating how changes to agricultural practices might help alleviate climate change; however, comparisons between different farming methods and land use change are complex and the findings from different research studies are often contradictory. Farming methods are varied in their effect on climate change, the environment, people, and the animals. Industrial pig and bird production, for example, is a significant source of GHG emissions and is predicted to become even greater with countries such China and India increasing production. On the other hand the more intense the production the less GHG emission per kg of product. There is a lack of research comparing organic or pasture-raised versus conventional or industrial animal agriculture and energy use. Most studies to date do not include a complete life cycle analysis of all the “ingredients” that go into animal agriculture, including land use changes (deforestation or the clearing of grasslands or pastures to produce crops for animal feed) and the amount of energy used to produce and transport fertilizer, antibiotics, feed, animals, and animal products. While it is difficult to compare species, regions, and farming systems some studies indicate that production of cattle, followed by dairy cows, pigs, and birds is the most damaging to the environment when considering such factors as the type of GHG emission, manure and industrial wastes, water use, production system, feed conversion, and land requirements , . However, these studies do not consider the effect agriculture production has on the animal or on the surrounding communities. Birds raised for meat and eggs are, just as other farmed animals including fish, sentient individuals recognized as such by various governments. While decreasing beef and increasing poultry production could potentially reduce GHG [...]

Haiti Earthquake Update

At least 482,000 people have left Haiti’s capital Port-au-Prince since the earthquake. They have left the city to stay with relatives in nearby towns that can provide shelter, states the UN agency. In the nights following the earthquake, many people in Haiti slept in the streets, on pavements, in their cars, or in makeshift shanty towns because their houses had been wrecked by the quake. There has been so much damage to buildings because structures are often raised wherever they can fit; many buildings were built on slopes with insufficient foundations. A representative of has estimated that about two million Haitians lived as squatters on land they did not own. The country also suffered from shortages of fuel and potable water even before the disaster. According to the UN food is running out in the towns that are now providing homes for the people who have left the capital. The outgoing population is also putting a huge strain on the medical centres, for lack of equipment and medicine. With the release of the charity single and many generous donations hopefully aid will be on its way. However the UN alone is hoping to raise $550 million for Haiti and there is a long way to go yet. Many websites are pledging money including a new website www.viewtochange.com which states it will give all its profits to charity. Using this website will support the cause. All our thoughts go to those affected by the earthquake at this difficult time
