How Much Survival Food Is Enough
Permalink There is a lot of talk, posts, and blogs that touch on storing enough survival food as a disaster insurance policy, ranging in size for short term emergencies all the way up to the-end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it (TEOTWAWKI) with enough supplies lasting for years. There are valid arguments for storing enough survival food for all ranges of these scenarios. The guideline is pretty simple… it simply boils down to risk tolerance , or the odds of the various disaster scenarios playing out
Katla Volcano Update 21 May 2010
Permalink The earthquakes at the Katla volcano site appear to possibly be increasing in frequency as of this moment (time will tell however). Since May 17 there have been four earthquakes at or very near Katla, while a 5th just on the edge of the Myrdalsjokull glacier. Although 4 or 5 earthquakes at the volcano site in 4 days does not indicate a drastic change in pattern, the interesting notation at the moment is the fact that the two most recent earthquakes occurred within 3 hours of each other on 21 May, 2010 , at depths of 5km and 13km.
Solar Energy A Simple Alternative
Permalink Solar Energy Conversion Well, as you know, it all starts by using the energy from the sun and converting it’s energy to usable energy for us here on earth. Basically, an energy unit from the sun is something called a photon (a particle that carries electromagnetic force). A photon particle released from the sun takes about 8 minutes to reach the earth.
Which Marigolds Are French Marigolds
Permalink The French Marigold flower is one of the more amazing ‘beneficial’ garden companions that will help a number of your garden plants to thrive with it’s potent pesticide-producing root system while also offering a rather strong aroma to confuse other pests. I believe there may be some confusion out there (I know I was initially confused) about which Marigold to purchase or to grow from seed, in order to be the ‘right’ one to classify as a ‘French Marigold’ so as to be the most effective in the garden for it’s beneficial companion properties to certain plants
Why Are 2010 Earthquakes Up 151 Percent
Permalink The number of magnitude 5.0 to 6.9 worldwide earthquakes are showing a significant increase so far this year during 2010, and are up 151 percent compared with the same range and time span of earthquakes since the year 1900, as of this independent analysis, 25-May-2010. The number of magnitude 7.0 to 8.9 worldwide earthquakes appear to be on track, or slightly increased from historical averages. Magnitude 4.9 or less was not analyzed partly because they generally cause little or no damage
How Much BP Oil Has Spilled Day 36
Permalink To determine a best guess as to the amount of oil that is gushing from the seafloor of the Gulf of Mexico from the explosion of the BP Deepwater Horizon on 20-Apr-2010, we averaged several of the existing estimates, which themselves range widely. Initially after the oil disaster, BP estimated the oil leak to be 1,000 barrels per day (42,000 gallons per day).
The Four Essentials Of Off Grid Solar
Permalink An off-grid solar electric power system is an ideal prep for the modern survivalist in that it can partially or totally relinquish you from dependence upon other systems, which themselves are vulnerable to disruption or breakdown. Off-grid systems also enable the ability to live away from the main stream, which opens the door to properties which may be more affordable than others that require connectivity to public systems. Even if living in suburbia, installing an off-grid system to be next to the existing grid system will provide you with a completely separate electrical circuit (separate outlets, etc… however you design it), reduce your dependency on the grid system, as well as provide a back-up means of electrical power during an outage or disaster situation
Todays Modern Survivalist
Permalink The modern day prepper / survivalist is at the core, a reflection of the fragility of the complicated and intertwined systems that we depend upon today that enable modern comfort, lifestyle, and the ability of millions to live in close proximity with each other. Many non-preppers look at this movement as a bunch of doom and gloomers who are actually hoping for the end of the world so that they can finally put their survival plan into action. Granted, there are those who are at the extremes of any group and no doubt there are some who actually hope for TEOTWAWKI
Worst Natural Disasters in the World: Relative to the Population
In the last 40 years, the Haiti earthquake has been the deadliest and most destructive natural disaster, when measured by the amount of deaths per inhabitants. The following chart ranks these disasters by the “deaths per million inhabitants” column. This is an interesting way to look at the damage caused by these disasters, as it highlights the overall percentage of deaths in each country. In the case of Haiti, approximately 2% of the population was killed. That’s a staggering number. Surely, every Haitian knew at least one person who lost their life in this tragedy. Another takeaway is that it’s almost split evenly between earthquakes/tsunamis (a byproduct of earthquakes) and cyclones
Flood Preparation: How to Use Flood Maps and Prepare
Historic rainfall and flooding in the Northeast this year has reminded us that, despite the danger of earthquakes, hurricanes, and other natural disasters, floods are the most common and widespread threat in the United States. Flooding can happen anywhere, but of course it’s much more likely to occur near bodies of water like rivers, lakes and streams. The most common question for anyone concerned about flooding is usually: Do I live in a flood-prone area? Fortunately, FEMA has made this research quite simple. FEMA’s Map Service Center provides detailed flood maps of neighborhoods all over the U.S. How to find your flood map : Simply go to http://msc.fema.gov At the top left of the home page, enter your address (see screenshot to the right) Although it may be a little slow to load, a detailed map will appear in a new window. The buttons on the left allow you to zoom in and out and pan across the map down to your specific street address
